Staying at Phoenix Haven was an amazing experience. The guesthouse is beautifully decorated with a cozy and authentic atmosphere. The bed was comfortable, and the amenities were well-maintained. The owner Mr. Liu went beyond his hospitality. He and his staffs were super helpful. They treated my husband and myself liked part of his family. I strongly recommend this hotel. 5 mins walk away from the river and very quiet. They serve lunch or dinner, has to pre-order a day ahead. Love their cooking. Must try.

The host is a true local - warm and down-to-earth! Not only does he maintain the homestay spotlessly clean and cozy, but he also surprised us with an unforgettable sunrise fishing experience! He shared fascinating Miao fishing traditions, turning it into a fully immersive cultural journey through Western Hunan's heritage. In the afternoon, he took me to an authentic Miao village - the terraced fields, lush forests and traditional stilt houses along the way were like scenes from a painting, completely untouched by commercial tourism, just pure Miao lifestyle. The homestay itself was wonderful with clean, comfortable rooms. Our host was exceptionally welcoming, even inviting us for evening tea while sharing stories about the ancient town. The location couldn't be better - everything from sightseeing to dining was within walking distance.

    A very unique place to be. A must visit place.

    A very unique place to be. A must visit place. We loved it even though we can’t read Chinese and speak a little only. We enjoyed our very short time there. Even in the rain it was great fun. Wear waterproof trainers when it’s rainy season as your feet will get wet and it can be slippery with the wrong footwear.

    The view of the river is so majestic, both during the day...

    The view of the river is so majestic, both during the day and the night! For women, the traditional attire rental is something everyone should try. The booking for Hanfu and Mao clothing are not available online though, but its everywhere once you are in the town.

    Fenghuang is really nice.

    Fenghuang is really nice. We've traveled a lot around China and people have been very friendly. One aspect of Fenghuang that we like was that it doesn't seem to get many western tourists nor has it changed to accommodate them --- for the better. The tourist maps tend to be in Chinese (only) which works but travelers should try to have some level of awareness of what to see and do --- that said, it's really nice just wandering the streets and alley ways without much of a plan.
