United KingdomLovely, quirky room within a few minutes walk of the lake and shops and yet surrounded by trees. I even saw a pair of reindeer on my way back from the supermarket! Plenty of parking and close to the road, but quiet. Very friendly host greeted us. I don't speak Finnish and she didn't speak much English so we got by with a mix of broken German and lots of pointing! The room was clean and well equipped. The shower was small but adequate.

Really friendly and nice staff at Raatteenportti.
Really friendly and nice staff at Raatteenportti. Good beach in Suomussalmi. Beautiful scenery. I recommend going by motorhome so accommodation will probably be better than for us who were traveling by car and used accommodation services.

Beautiful landscapes, lots of water bodies.
Beautiful landscapes, lots of water bodies. The Sounding Forest is a nice little walking trail in a stunning ridge landscape. Raatteentie tells the story of a dark history. The Silent People is an impressive work of art. The central settlement of Ämmänsaari has good basic services for tourists.

There is plenty to see for a day or two.
There is plenty to see for a day or two. I recommend dining at Teboil or the excellent Kultaissen Kukko. Frisbee golf and a caravan park in the harbour. In the summer, the Kiantalaiva ferry runs from the harbour to Turjanlinna to the landscapes of the writer Ilmari Kianto.

Nature nearby, hiking trails and waterways, also berry fields and bogs. Unfortunately, the new service points (and spa?) along the road have taken customers away from traditional local shops and eateries, even though they are nicer and would be happy to support them.

The spa hotel Kiannon kuohut is located in a really beautiful place. The riverbank is beautiful and well maintained. It is wonderful to go for a walk from there, both to the shore of Lake Kiantajärvi or to the riverbank along good paths. And in winter also to ski or take a dip in the open air.

Very helpful and accommodating hosts, location in Suomussalmi's center, and a good breakfast. There is a grocery shop and a ski rental place just 2 minutes away from the B&B. The location should also be very convenient for visiting Hossa national park.

My stay was alright; the view from the hotel was nice, and the central location was convenient. Nothing extraordinary, but it served its purpose.
