Located in historic Burgundy, the fortressed city of Beaune has many fortifications and landmarks remaining from its past, such as the medieval Hospices Civils de Beaune and its magnificent old city.

Beaune is the heart of France's beautiful, wine-centric Burgundy region. It's a good base for exploring the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, and has lots of restaurants, tasting rooms and wine shops. If you don't want to rent a car, you can rent bikes or walk to just about everything in town. We had an exceptional dinner at Soul Kitchen (make a reservation; there are only 12 seats) and also at La Ciboulette. Breakfast was good, as we're the morning staff. When I asked for a map of Beaune on arrival, I was directed to a rack of tourist leaflets, none of which were helpful!. The following morning when I asked for a map of Beaune, I was given one immediately by a very pleasant receptionist. I could not get an Internet connection in my room. It's a beautiful town with lots to see, including the mediaeval ramparts that were added to (cheaply!) in the 17th century. The Fine Arts Museum was worth a visit and there was an extensive and well-priced Saturday market. Wine obviously figures highly, and there are lots of decent restaurants with extensive wine lists. My view is that the price and quality of the carafe wines is a good indication of the quality of the restaurant but this breaks down in Beaune where the carafe wines are not the simple pleasure that they should be.Guest review byJulian ElphickUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Beaune is a wonderful town well worth a visit. The Hospices de Beaune was fascinating and beautiful, and of course the wines were spectacular - well worth the trip! We particularly enjoyed our visit to the Cité des Vins where we learned so much about the history of Burgundy wine and wine making. All the famous wine towns of Burgundy are easily accessible and Dijon - with all its history - an easy drive away.
