We visited Lydford specifically for the gorge.

We visited Lydford specifically for the gorge. The Whitelady waterfall was lovely but a very long steep trek for just one waterfall. The Devils Cauldren was the highlight. A shorter, but more tricky, walk. Amazing sheer sides with a roaring river in the bottom. Steps clinging to the sheer sides with just a single hand rail to hang on to. No dogs or children allowed in the more hazardous bits. I was alternately amazed and terrified.

On our first morning we visited the famous gorge. Even using a cane it was manageable, and well worth the effort to see and hear the Cauldron and then visit the White Lady waterfall. The moor is virtually on the doorstep which ever way one travels, and is a perfect place for walking and exploring. The are has a variety of pubs, all supplying food.

Lydford is a small village just off the A386 to the west of Dartmoor and south of Okehampton. Probably most famous for the Lydford gorge but the village itself has other attraction including Lydford Castle which is actually an old courthouse and prison and mounds from the Saxon town. There is also an ancient spring and numerous footpaths. It has a traditional village pub and there is a nearby farm shop. From the village it's possible to see and easily reach the moor with its Tors and ancient settlements, stone rows etc:

Lydford Gorge is a wonderful walk,(National Trust) challenging for some, in parts, with narrow slippery paths, hand rails provided where necessary. Not difficult, but care must be taken at all times when near the river. The Castle Inn very good food and service.

Lydford and the surrounding areas have much to offer those who have never been before and those like myself who have either been before or worked in the area. Churchyards with interesting churchyards, monuments, Lydford Gorge. The space of Dartmoor for peaceful thoughts. Life is far too busy these days, lose yourself within this part of the country. You will return home feeling refreshed from visiting here...and have the need of a return.

The place was beautiful, and well worth going. The waterfall itself is huge and the walk around the trust is easy going and relaxing. Well worth going to the bird hide if you've got the time too :)

The location was superb. It is near Lydford Gorge but I wasn't going there - I was cycle touring Devon coast to coast so it was ideally situated for an overnight stop. The staff were excellent - so welcoming and helpful. They locked my bike in a secure shed and showed me to a very comfortable. clean room. The food was incredible - some of the best fish and chips ever tasted washed down with well kept cask beer and, in the morning a gorgeous cooked breakfast.

The house was cosy and nice. The hosts were very kind, and had milk, bit of jam, marmalade and small breads ready for us in the house. The woodstove was also all set up for us to make a fire. Great location for a day trip into Dartmoor, unfortunately we didn’t have time to see Lydford Gorge, but we did have a nice walk around the church and castle ruins. The Castle Inn further down the road was also lovely.

The location of the hotel was really picturesque in the heart and there were beautiful views of the surrounding area. The room was lovely with a really comfortable bed and the breakfast was lovely with delicious food. The hotel was beautifully situated on main road giving great access to tourist sites in the area and also great access to the Picturesque Tamar Valley.

We had a relaxed and comfortable stay with a super breakfast each day. Angela is a warm and friendly host. Our room overlooked at least four tors with the plus of a morning hello from the family peacocks. The village of Lydford is nearby, and has a charming pub serving food. The village church is beautiful.

We had a fantastic stay at Lydford House. Property and grounds were stunning; lovely rooms and facilities. The breakfast was superbly presented with plenty of choice, and the property host was very friendly.
