FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

York is an interesting and intriguing place to visit. Lots to see, ancient and historic buildings, museums, theatres, plenty of options for dining and a host of quality retail shops. York is so full of history and museums and also picturesque on the river Ouse. Probably a walking city though we both took the hop on and off with a very detailed commentary. Definitely have a supreme after noon tea at Betty's, explore the Shambles and other museums that take your fancy. We passed on the Viking Museum as there was too long a cue but Clifford's Tower and adjoining museum was interesting. We also enjoyed the river cruise. The evensong at York Minster was amazing

History mad so a lot to like!

History mad so a lot to like! Shame so much new build surrounding the old city. Too many favourite places to name. The red house antique and tea room is fabulous. Items dating back thousands of years!

York is a great city, and people very friendly. Lots to see and do. Our trip was mainly for Christmas shopping, there is plenty of shops to browse. I have been to York many times, so didn’t go to any tourist attractions apart from Guy Falkes Inn, and the Golden Fleece Inn which are very old.

    Interesting historical city.

Interesting historical city. York Minster is a must for anyone visiting. The shambles with its winding streets and late medieval houses is full of character and buzz . These are my two top places to see. However the overall character of the city is wonderful.

Lovely room with an en suite bathroom. Comfortable rooms with everything you need for an overnight stay. Mark was extremely helpful and lovely throughout the whole duration of our stay. He helped us to park at the accommodation and allowed us early entry into our room, he offered advice on the local area and best things to go and see with lots of history too! The hotel was quiet with the other guests and was in the most perfect location for York City centre. Would highly recommend booking here for your stay in York. Thank you!
