FAQs about hotels in Genoa

Ship Shape and Fancy Free

Right on the Ligurian coast, Genoa features Europe’s largest historic quarter and Italy’s largest seaport. As the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.

By the old port (Porto Antico), there are several bars and restaurants serving the local specialty, pesto. Other Genoese favorites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade, Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighborhood, where colorful boats bob up and down.

The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.

South is the historic quarter with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

As you approach Genova Airport, look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the "Superb City." Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodations, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.

What Guests Said About Genoa:

One of those places “must visit”.

One of those places “must visit”. City needs to be toured at least twice, during day light, and during the evening/night, when the illumination brings different feelings. City centre can be comfortably walk around. And obviously, food and vine … spoiling utterly, irresistible. Rich history, you will see it everywhere.

It was a pleasant surprise!

It was a pleasant surprise! The people were very friendly and we were made to feel welcome. The food was great with lots of choices. We loved the Bigo on the waterfront which provides a panoramic view - well worth it.

I liked that Genoa wasn't touristy like other large cities in Italy, it's a much larger city than expected. I wasn't there long, so didn't get to see many attractions, did walk around the city and have lunch. Great for photos!

Genoa is a fascinating city, almost entirely overlooked by tourists (apart from the thousands delivered by the giant cruise liners). Between the 15th and 18th centuries it became fabulously wealthy from international trade and banking as a maritime power. That wealth is displayed in dozens of extraordinary palaces, which together are grouped as a UNESCO World Heritage asset focused on the Via Garibaldi. The Palazzo Reale is a must-see. The wealthy sought to save their souls by endowing an array of wonderful Baroque churches, amongst which the Santissima Annunziata stands out as a truly remarkable example - another must see. Off the main streets the medieval plan survives in the form of a maze of tiny alleys only a few feet wide: fine to explore by day but avoid after dark. Today's Genoa is a bustling modern city with excellent shopping, including a tremendous range of smaller independent stores. Like all sea ports there is a gritty underside under the glamour, which in common with Naples, is all part of the essence of the place.

Refreshingly free from over-tourism with only the Via Garibaldi palaces getting really busy. In most cities you may never be more than 20 feet from a rat; in Genoa you're never more than 20 feet from a coffee shop. With cakes, Focaccia and Farinata. And the number of restaurants isn't far behind, most with quality at very reasonable prices. The narrow lanes of the huge old town are daunting at first, but you soon get used to navigating by landmarks above you.

Absolutely beautiful place. It's a room that has all the complimentary amenities of a 5-star hotel. The design is beautiful, and the room is super comfortable. The host even brought some treats that really bring out the charm of staying in Italy. The experience of staying in this place is surely worth paying slightly more than for an average room in Genoa. For the best experience, I would recommend to text or call the host shortly before the arrival, maybe 15-30 min so that they can meet you on time.
