The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown

As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza swathed in vibrant pink blossom, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in paradise. The stunning location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.

However, it’s not its only glory. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the Greek Theatre is also a triumph. Its largely intact seating offers wonderful views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Spine-tingling summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars also offer live music.

Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, whose clock tower and church are overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.

A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the centre of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the south-west is the long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and north is the bay by Mazzaró.

As you would expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there is no shortage of Taormina accommodation on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, town centre apartments and luxury B&Bs.

Definitely need more than 2 nights to see the beauty of Taormina. We had a rental car and did get around, but I feel that we wasted time driving. If we had walked down into the main part of town, we would have seen more. We did take a 2 hour boat tour Which was very nice.

Taormina is a beautiful historical town with much to do and...

Taormina is a beautiful historical town with much to do and see. It is however very touristy, prices at restaurants and bars for apertivi are high. Surrounding areas are also beautiful! The view of Mt. Etna is spectacular if you are staying above the main center of town, but even from town the view is amazing.

Taormina is gorgeous and charming, and I would consider going again (for a third time). Because of its beauty and charm, it is very crowded--always. But, that is Italy. You can walk everywhere and everywhere you go is beautiful, the beach, the surrounding hillside, and the narrow little streets and staircases that take you to charming piazzas and other charming streets.

Simply a beautiful location. A must-see on anyone's list. Even more spectacular views from Castelmola, a bit further up. Taormina has plenty of shops, restaurants and a good range of properties. Roadways can be tricky. Look out for cruise ship passengers, who crowd Taormina in-season, whether their ships are anchored in Giardini Naxos, Messina or Catania.

The town itself is beautiful with wonderful views. The centre has a great choice of shops and restaurants but prices of meals and drinks varied a great deal and were not always good value. There were also cover charges in some restaurants and cafes and the wine bars were poor value with a small measure of wine costing 9 euros. The beaches, including Isola Bella were disappointing,with pebbles rather than sand and not appealing for swimming. The bus tours around the town and to Savoca were disappointing and not worth the money. Although I would recommend Taormina for a short visit, I would warn against going in high season due to the huge number of tourists and it is over-hyped and overpriced.

Taormina is like something out of a 1950s Italian romantic...

Taormina is like something out of a 1950s Italian romantic movie. The Corso Umberto, main street, is immaculately maintained and attracts thousands of tourists every day. The endless numbers of stairs to cafés, restaurants, churches, parallel streets, pubs, bars and lookout points makes the centre of Taormina a labyrinth that is simply a delight to explore for 1-2 days. Shutterbugs will shudder with delight from all the photogenic subjects to capture in and around the town.

Excellent location - but be prepared to go up and down stairs to access the location! You are in Taormina after all! Very close to the centre of Taormina and also to a great pick up/drop off spot for taxis/car services, very reasonably priced. The hotel has a lift which makes getting suitcases up and down to and from your room very easy. Alex is amazing and so accommodating, ask him anything! Take advantage of the beach club deal - gorgeous spot! Thanks Alex!

The hotel was close to the centre of Taormina and within easy walking distance as was the cable car to the beach, yet it was quiet at night. The view from our room and small balcony was beautiful. The bathroom had a great shower and room and bathroom clean. Breakfast was simple but tasty and the breakfast room had wonderful views over the sea.
