My wife wants to see the penguins, so we went there. Then she want to see the winter festival, so we went there.
Well, I just want to get to where it is cold enough to practice my bioenergy methods. so I am okay with those plans. Other than that, there really isn't much to see in Asahikawa.

One of the good things about Asahikawa is that it is a good base for exploring the northern parts of Hokkaido. In our case it provided access to Asahidake, the flower farms of Biei and Furano. Though we didn't have much time to enjoy the autumn colors of the rest of Daisetsuzan National park, Asahikawa provided us a good take-off point as we headed to Wakkanai.

Asahidake Ropeway and Zoo were really great!
Asahidake Ropeway and Zoo were really great! I wish that I had more time at the zoo. The zoo layout is really good, we can get up close to the animals. We were there in mid Jun, perhaps due to the cool temperature, the animals were very active. We also gotten great shopping deals are Aeon Mall.

I mostly just used Asahikawa as a base to explore Daisetsuzan. I could have easily stayed for longer doing this even without poking around the city much. In general it was much cheaper to get a hotel/ryokan in Asahikawa and rent a car than to get lodging at the more expensive onsen resorts right in Daisetsuzan. I don't regret this decision at all. Nightlife was surprisingly active even on weekdays despite the fairly limited number of venues.

A nice town to visit and stay for a few days.
A nice town to visit and stay for a few days. In my opinion, it was
a perfect location for day trips to Biei and Furano. I would recommend
this town to may friends.....City was clean, people very friendly. We
felt safe staying in Asahikawa. I went walking at 4:30am on the
paved path along the river next to JR Asahikawa station. Its beautiful
and well manicured. I enjoyed taking photos of the beautiful flower
garden close to the hospital.

Enjoyable northern city, great as a base only 1.5 hours from Sapporo by frequent fast train.. .easy bus access to hiking mountain range Daisetsuzan. Train to Kamikawa and bus to Sounkyo for Mt Kurodake, stunning alpine flowers in summer. Onsen at Sounkyo and accommodation. Bus to Obihiro..train on to Kushiro with wonderful Wetlands and Red Crowned cranes.
Trains run to Ueno Farm English Garden, 15 min to Sakuraokoa Station and nice walk from end May..Best in summer months, recommend. Furano line for Biei, KamiFurano for Goto Sumio art museum highly recommended. Furano for flowers, Lavender Farm St gets busy in season. Train, or drive to Wakkanai for Sarobetsu National Park flowers in summer, hike on Rishiri and Rebun islands , access by ferry. Train, drive onto Abashiri for Shiretoko.
Asahikawa has nice parks for strolling at sakura season in May. Good Ainu culture museums. Station provides all amenities..tourist information centre and good Mothers kitchen food, shopping, average food court and good supermarket. Try traditional cafés Furukoshi and Whiz along main street from station towards Tokiwa Park..friendly helpful places serving nice food and drink.
Hokkaido is a very large island with fantastic natural landscapes..a very long winter but skiing good.
This property is centrally located with convenience. In fact there is a bus stand in front of the hotel.
Rooms were clean & definitely value for money.
Staffs were polite as usual in Japan, little English knowledge but they managed well.
Note-we speak little Japanese as well so unsure for a foreigner with zero Japanese skill.
Breakfast is wholesome but a bit Japanese centric, though you will have sausage or scrambled egg as a choice.
overall nice peaceful stay for couple of nights.
Just next to JR Asahikawa St. on top of AEON mall. Although room abit small but they provided what was required in a small room. Provided free in-house public bath, coffee & tea. Very convenient location to stay at. Daily parking JPY800. Nice city view from the hotel window in the morning. Suggest to rent a car to drive around Asahikawa, Biei, Furano from nearby car rental stores.
Great location clean and quiet. Hokaido resort liner to the door. Aeon mall and jr rail is only a block away. The short cut out the back door makes it very close.
Onsen is very good and free for hotel guests, although it is not natural spring it is so clean and many different pools to use. Sauna is really hot and a cold pool is really cold. Highly recommend.
Everything was really clean, location was great. The hotel's carpark couldn't take my Noah as it was too high, but directed me to the opposite carpark to park and included the fee for daily parking. Seico mart opposite. No weird smells in the rooms or corridors, and very business-hotel/everyone's already checked out in the morning.
The size of the room was good but it was quite dated with only a small window. The breakfast buffet is good but it can get a bit crowded in the restaurant with some waiting time. Parking directly at the hotel is only for small cars. The have options in several parking lots around the hotel for bigger cars but it's a short walk.
Looks a run down love hotel that feels like an art installation. Every floor comes with different plastic flower arrangements and the rooms have still the original interior with now retro looking technical devices - I loved every bit of it. I wished I could have seen the rooms in the 8th floor with bar and billiard inside!
The facility was clean and classy, and overall a great value. The staff spoke surprisingly good English in the absence of my Japanese skills, and they literally ran to fulfill a simple requests. Thanks Smile hotel for the hard work. Baggage check service was safe as can be, with storage available behind the front desk.
The hotel is very near Asahikawa JR Station. There is a big shopping mall with a lot of restaurant options. On the 1st floor of the hotel, there is a big drug & beauty store. It is perfect to look at the products slowly and there are not many people. The bed, pillow, and duvet are very comfortable.
Very conveniently located just at a walking distance from the JR Asahikawa station, rooms are a bit small but the beds are super comfortable, necessary amenities are available, breakfast is good, the staff is professional and helpful. I had a pleasant stay in this hotel.
The location of JR Inn Asahikawa was excellent....we traveled by JR train and was so happy to see that the hotel was
directly connected to shopping and dining!
Our family enjoyed the morning breakfasts.......It helped to make our day enjoyable.
Near train station.. a lot of bus around... lot of resto around.. nice bar in the hotel.. staff big smiley and professional.. woman shower lock with a code door... Private room, decent size room..
Very close to the train station and convenient store at the ground floor. Very good breakfast. I like sautéed Hokkaido asparagus. We could leave our luggage for the afternoon after we checked out.
A great hotel with friendly staff and modern, clean rooms. Brilliant location right next to Asahikawa train station and bus terminal. I would definitely stay here again!
