I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024.
I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024. Sounkyo is a very picturesque small town. There are Sika deer that come into the town center to eat! The Sounkyo Gorge is impressive with mount Kurodake toweing over the Gorge.
Take the Daisetsuzan Sōunkyō Kurodake Ropeway and on a good day you can see a 360 degree panorama of the Daisetuzan mountain range.
There is a very good Visitors Center in Sounkyo with very friendly and helpful staff. One of the staff took me on a walk through the deep new powder snow which had fallen the night before. The lady took me just because she loved that area and was pleased I was interested in finding walks to explore.
I would love to come here again in the summer and Autumn to see the changing seasons.

Great walks and lovely scenery.
Great walks and lovely scenery. Recommend to come in 1st week October cause we came on 3rd week and the autumn leaves didn’t appear yet. Regardless thoroughly enjoyed the ambience , walks and scenery. Will visit again !

First I should say that I really loved Sounkyo - I would like to come back. However, I wouldn't stay at this hotel again!
The public areas of the hotel - the lounge and bakery on the ground floor were nice.
The onsens were nice with scenic views of the canyon and mountains.
There is a free shuttle bus to and from Asahikawa which can be arranged.
I booked a Japanese style room and it was quite big.
An electrical power strip with USB charging sockets was provided in the room.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. They took my details after I told them that I was a solo hiker and they checked that I returned safely everyday, which I really appreciated. All the food was lovely and I enjoyed the buffet after all the hiking! The outdoor onsen was also a real treat with great views. Location-wise, everything was in easy walking distance.
Nice that there was a shower in the private bathroom, which is not a given in onsen hotels.

Wonderful 2 nights stay at Sounkyo hostel.
Ideally located to hike in the beautiful Daisetsuzan National Park.
Good atmosphere in the shared dinner room and the staff is very friendly and careful. They have maps of hiking trails.
Everything is clean and convenient.
I tried the Onsen with the reduced ticket (in the hotel just in front of Sounkyo) and it had a great view on the mountains.

Cosy, comfortable house in a great part of Hokkaido with beautiful nature all around. Roxy was really welcoming and was good company too 😀
We loved our stay and would definitely stay again!

The hotel is much better than it appears at first glance. Helpful staff, good onsen, clean rooms and excellent restaurant buffet. Somewhat tired facilities but very good value for money.
