I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024.
I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024. Sounkyo is a very picturesque small town. There are Sika deer that come into the town center to eat! The Sounkyo Gorge is impressive with mount Kurodake toweing over the Gorge.
Take the Daisetsuzan Sōunkyō Kurodake Ropeway and on a good day you can see a 360 degree panorama of the Daisetuzan mountain range.
There is a very good Visitors Center in Sounkyo with very friendly and helpful staff. One of the staff took me on a walk through the deep new powder snow which had fallen the night before. The lady took me just because she loved that area and was pleased I was interested in finding walks to explore.
I would love to come here again in the summer and Autumn to see the changing seasons.

Great walks and lovely scenery.
Great walks and lovely scenery. Recommend to come in 1st week October cause we came on 3rd week and the autumn leaves didn’t appear yet. Regardless thoroughly enjoyed the ambience , walks and scenery. Will visit again !

Everything! I loved it! Staff was sooo kind and created a really warm and homely environment. Had some of the best sleep on my entire journey in those beds, dont know what it is about them, very comfortable. Provided shoe dryer for me after dipping into a pond. Dinner was great every evening. Also it is possible to rent bear spray and bells, as well as additional equipment if necessary. Great location. Possible to go to adjacent hotels for the onsen with a reduced fare.
10/10 would recommend and Book again.

Breakfast was great, good value for money and location was the best, 7/11 directly across the road and facilities in the hotel to heart and eat in a quiet area. Most of staff spoke broken English and we were able to communicate well, no Google translate needed. Most staff wanted to help even though you are a foreigner.

Food was very good at breakfast and dinner. Having ur own bbq was superb. We were also upgraded half way through our stay as was my partners birthday. Staff could not do enough for us. Absolutely fabulous hotel!!!

Spacious and clean rooms. Onsite onsen which has indoor and mixed outdoor onsen. Back of hotel faces the river which has a nice scenic view and soothing sounds from gush of water

Breakfast was great. Location was about 10 mins walk away from Dohoku Bus Terminal at Sounkyo Onsen Town. Hotel was old but clean and area was beautiful.
