I booked the room with private Onsen/bathroom and garden. It was absolutely amazing. What a beautiful and calm place. Very comfortable. Amazing food. Great experience. My room was a bit more modern with heating and lots of light and newer wood but the other rooms looked nice too, darker wood and more traditional. I think any room is worth a stay. The entire experience was special and beautiful.

This was a fantastic experience and a highlight of our trip. We had a private dinner and breakfast and the temple was not busy while we were there so had the opportunity to have what turned out to be a private onsen experience.

It was my first time staying in a temple. The whole experience was excellent (meditation, morning ceremony and homa ceremony). The monks were very helpful. Everything was very clean. My stay was during winter and my room was heated, which made it comfortable. The food (dinner and breakfast) was great.

I think it’s the best place we’ve ever stayed in, though we did upgrade to a junior suite with bathroom facility. The staff were charming, the food was amazing and the morning temple service was calming and inspiring and involved the guests. It’s a quiet temple set back from the road close to no 8 bus stop and near the cemetery walk through the huge cedars to the temple at the end. Gardens there were beautiful. Served alcohol, too.

A very nice experience ! Very warm welcome, spiritual experience and comfortable stay in a fantastic and inspiring environment ! In more practical terms : location was perfect and not far from the temples, the premises are very nicely designed with inspiring gardens, the room was clean and we spent a good night, and the meditation and the morning experience were also inspiring.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed. The kindness and quiet beauty and the FOOD were heavenly. A friend suggested we go and stay a night in a temple for the full experience, (although a day trip is fine,) and we are so glad that we did. The Buddhist Okunoin cemetery is the largest in Japan and is lit by lanterns at night for a beautiful otherworldly (but actually this world! ;) unforgettable evening walk. Beautiful temples and sacred sites to visit, and many shops and little cafes to enjoy. We stayed in the Sanboin temple and were so delighted by our experience.

Don't miss touring the cemetery.

Don't miss touring the cemetery. It is amazing with so many different types of monuments and statuary. We toured it without a guide during the day light hours and feel that we really didn't miss anything by not seeing it by moonlight. The town has an ancient feel to it and is worth spending at least one night. I just wish that there were more choices for hotels as the only choices seem to be a Guest House and a multitude of Monasteries.

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, wondered into the info centre Saturday & they were very helpful. Walked through the cemetery & then had lunch in one of the cafes open. Not many open on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday a.m we experience the Ceremony half by the Monks in the main temple. Wouldn’t visit again in the winter as it’s extremely cold.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely. Would have enjoyed having more time to visit the town. We only stayed one night (which is good, because it was very expensive). However, the train logistics from Okayama meant that we ararived in Koyasan about 2pm and so had very little time to see it. We left after lunch the following day. Two fuller days and one night would have been ideal.

This was a really lovely place to stay for our one night in Koyasan, and we wished we’d had more time here. The monks were so kind and welcoming, the vegan dinner and breakfast were both amazing (and served in the room!), and we loved everything we did through the temple: the meditation class, the cemetery tour (which cost extra but definitely worth it), the morning prayers and the fire ritual. Mount Koya is definitely tourist-y, but Eko-in does an amazing job of making it still feel serene.

Loved how spacious the room was, there was even a couch and small TV. Tommy was great at explaining what was open and closed in the area. Very clean and modern, always looked forward to going back to the guesthouse after a day of exploring. Great shower and bidet. Would recommend to anyone staying at Koyasan as an alternative to temple lodging. It's a convenient location for walking to all the sights in Koyasan and for taking the bus.

This property offers a unique experience, staying at a Buddhist Temple. The half board inclusion is Japanese vegan food, reflective of what the priest and monks eat every day. It was well prepared and enjoyable.Although they don’t consume alcohol it can be purchased at a reasonable price during dinner. The spacious accommodation is operated by trainee monks who were very friendly and make us feel most welcome.

Staff was super helpful, good position in Koyasan, very good onsen baths, comfortable simple rooms. The morning ceremony where guests were invited to participate was amazing. Also very good price, one of the cheapest temple lodges I found in Koyasan. Many of the other temple lodges are too expensive in my opinion.
