Location was great - central within 7 minutes walk of the train station and less than 5 to the main shopping area. Staff were very friendly and at breakfast they changed the menu most days and included local specialties. There was always vegetarian choices such as salad, egg, rice and different tofu dishes.

Loved the peace and quiet after spending time in busy Tokyo. The morning markets and the Old Town were relaxing to stroll through and the locals were very helpful. We would definitely stay here again. Such a beautiful historical town.

Because i didn't know how good this Ryokan is i just planed the stay for one night. Probably it could be extended for at least one more night or two. Since we stayed there only one night we didn't plan to go much around.

It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

Takayama is a beautiful town.
Takayama is a beautiful town. It has a well preserved old district with historic buildings. We visited during spring and took a day trip to the ropeway. It would look amazing during winter. The people were super friendly & enjoyed tourists company.
We had chosen the room with private onsen with breakfast and dinner included.
We were shown to our room by an Obasan (As our room was deep inside the ryokan towards the end!), and she explained everything about our room and the facilities available! Modern amenities with the rustic traditional ryokan, love it.
We had an allocated private space to dine in at the restaurant, and the set course meal was really enjoyable!
As we spoke little to none Japanese, the staff were thoroughly helpful and tried their best in explaining.
Overall, the hotel had very warm and inviting vibes. From the moment we stepped in, the staff came up to greet us and take our luggage. We were personally attended to and shown around the hotel and the room itself. The Japanese breakfast was lovely and the room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The public bath was clean and we had the space to ourselves whenever we went - it was not crowded. The ryokan’s location is also very close to the train station and the Nohi Bus Station, and very walkable into the centre of town.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Wood Takayama. I highly recommend that anyone who goes to Takayama to stay there. The facilities are great. The staff is amazing. The traditional Japanese breakfast is excellent and fantastic free happy hour from 5pm - 11pm. We were truly impressed with the service and the staff. We had difficulties getting a taxi to go to the train station on our day of departure. one of the staff used his own car to take us to the station. He went above and beyond his duties. That's service.
Super polished traditional Japanese hotel. Location is very convenient — short walk to the old town and to the main strip of restaurants. The service was good. If you are an English speaker the staff speaks good English. The restaurant recommendations made by the staff were phenomenal — best meal we had in Takayama. The room was nice. The hotel is gorgeous. There was a lot of attention to detail including free umbrellas given by the hotel since it was raining.
Lovely country ryokan up in the mountains with great onsen baths. Its remote and no facilities nearby but if you want a real Japanese ryokan experience this is great value. Dont expect Western menu but enjoy the artistry of japanese cuisine. There is a bus stop 150m away but buses run hourly genetslly. 1.5hr to Takayama and 2hrs or so to Matsumoto. Both via Hirayu Onsen. Its also close to beautiful Kamikochi and the Shin Hotaka Ropeway.
The hotel staff service is 100%! We bought a long souvenir wooden stick and needed to check how to do baggage delivery. Staff sourced for random cardboard boxes and volunteered to wrap for us! We were so grateful. Location is superb. Just a stone's throw away from.Takayama Station. Washer n Dryer worked perfectly for us as we were able to wash n dry our ski clothes to repack into luggage before travelling back to Nagoya.
Very nice and traditional Ryokan near the main attraction of Takayama. The staff was always attentive and welcoming with us. The traditional Japan dinner and breakfast are served in your room at specific times and with a fix menù so l suggest this experience only to who is open to try new and very different tastes compared to our usual continental dinners.Overall an excellent stay!
This is an excellent budget option: the full ryokan experience at a very affordable price. The rooms are HUGE and the onsen are truly gorgeous. The staff are caring and kind, the room is beautiful with a view of the perfect Japanese garden. I highly recommend staying here. The meals are traditional washoku style — we recommend upgrading the meal to include the marvelous Hida beef.
The friendly staff who were able to communicate in English. To be greeted with happy faces in the morning made my stay very pleasant.
Buffet breakfast had western & Japanese food.
Location of hotel is walking distance to Takayama old town.
Naiwa Sushi within 1 min walk from hotel was a “lesser known” gem for sushi dinner.
Availability of Pte or family onsen was a bonus.
Our stay was exceptional. We really needed a rest after 4 days of walking in Tokyo and Yukimurasaki delivered. Check in was easy and welcoming, the hotel is all-tatami so it was easy on our feet, private baths were great and really warm and the food was totally amazing. The Ryokan is honestly an incredible value. Probably the best food experience I've had in my life.
Beautifully designed place, more hostel than hotel. I enjoyed the mixture of modernity and traditional Japanese style, the thoughtful use of wood throughout the place. Comfortable mattresses and soft linen. When the lounge is not too busy, nice place to hang out or even make some food. Great location, everything in Takayama is easily accessible by foot anyways.
What a great hotel for a lovely break in Takayama ; far from the busy, overcrowded cities. The big suite is perfect for a romantic escapade, with a view on the city & the mountains, which is gorgeous at sunset. The bathtub was amazing, it was so relaxing! And we had a balcony to enjoy our even more. I highly recommend.
The service was outstanding, that staff were welcoming and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. Dinner was very good, lots of gorgeous Hida beef, and a good introduction to a multicourse Japanese meal for our teenagers. The ryokan is well located for the morning markets and old town Takayama.
Very well located ryokan only couple minutes from the train station. The staff was very friendly and helpful, we were provided with plenty of information to move around Takayama. The Onsen was great, very well
organized and clean. We had a great and unique experience
Absolutely amazing! Our best experience in Japan! The ryokan is so well let and well decorated, and everyone was very accommodating and kind. The onsen was also great and breakfast was delicious. I would come to Takayama again just for the chance to stay here again.
Excellent service from the first time you enter it until the moment you pick up the luggage. The hotel offers onsen and spa services, highly recommending for lady getting a massage and visiting the rest area. Location in the center of Takayama historic district
You do not stay here for all the mod cons of a new hotel. You stay for an experience in an old-fashioned ryokan, a wonderful family running the place, a glorious onsen, and sensational breakfast. I've been twice now, and would stay again.
The hotel is beautiful, just in the historic district of Takayama.
The room was amazing really big with a natural decoration and super comfortable Japanese tatami beds.
The breakfast was amazing and the public onsen was beautiful.
Authentic Japanese Ryokan experience. Very clean, very polite staff, and very close to the train station, restaurants and morning market. We loved our stay and definitely will come back.
the private baths were amazing and free of charge! the entire place is a cool cross between a ryokan and a hotel. our room had a great view over Takayama
