What an upmarket B&B, really lovely with every possible convenience at your disposal. The lovely hosts Karla, generously offers without charge soft drinks, pod coffee/creme, confectionary and even a small bottle of wine. There are two large smart TVs with streaming services, one in the main apartment area, the other in the bedroom. Towelling robes are also provided. As for the breakfast, amazing, what a feast, beautifully presented with thoughtful 'doggy bags' provided so you can take away what you don't eat. Would I recommend a stay here? You bet I would - there was even a secure garage for my motorbike 😊

Probably the best place I've ever stayed! At least, I’m sure I’ve never given a “10” for all parameters. Silence. No extraneous sounds, you can't hear your neighbors at all. Having arrived, we just sat for a while and enjoyed the peace and tranquility of this place. Cleanliness. Clean in the toilet, clean towels, clean in the bathroom, clean floors (I walked on it in white socks, and they remained white!), no dust anywhere, even on the radiators. If you need to cook, there is a kitchen area right in the room, which has a refrigerator, microwave, stove, sink, dishes, coffee machine, kettle. The living room is very cozy, with a wonderful bay window. And in our case (we were there on New Year’s Eve) with a good view: all the fireworks were visible, and when we were tired of standing at the window, we sat on the sofa and could still continue to watch them. Great breakfast! Juice, coffee, tea, croissants, buns, butter, jam, fruit, eggs, pancakes, yoghurt, muesli, ham, cheese — there is plenty to choose from. The hostess greeted us with coffee and cookies. She appeared only upon check-in, and then at breakfast in the morning. Welcoming and friendly, but clearly does not like long empty conversations, which we really appreciate in people)). Therefore, it was very comfortable to interact with her.

Although there are some neighborhoods behind the buildings...

Although there are some neighborhoods behind the buildings here and there, the journey along the main street (and the water) offers a good glimpse into the differences in housing construction. It's clear that the various residents had unequal construction budgets. As is well known, the Labor Party had many members here. Low-wage jobs were overwhelmingly in the majority.

There's not much to see, but it was nice along the water.

There's not much to see, but it was nice along the water. We ate at the Bakhuys in Winschoten, which was fantastic, but even there it wasn't great. Lots of decay and closed shops.

Close to Veendam with the beautiful Veenkoloniale Museum and...

Close to Veendam with the beautiful Veenkoloniale Museum and also close to Winschoten, also beautiful and not far from Bourtange, the fantastic fortress where the history of the Northern Netherlands was and is of great importance for the country / the State, the Seven Provinces with ultimately the success of the Peace of Münster of 1648.

Best accommodation of our 8 day trip. Quirky. Comfy bed. The most amazing breakfast! By a canal. Oude Pekela is small and quiet. No bars etc open during the week. Only 1 restaurant open which was a pizza place (had amazing pizzas though). Host (who's name I've completely forgotten, sorry) was lovely - took time to show us around the accomodation and have a chat.
