Ålesund, per se, is not a major attraction.
Ålesund, per se, is not a major attraction. However, this nice city is an excellent starting point to explore the surroundings spectacular fjords, drive the Atlantic road, and eventually go to other regions. That was what we did and it went extremely well. A very pretty town and setting.
A very pretty town and setting. Town mostly rebuilt following devastating fire in 1904, so, many building have Art Nouveau influence. Art Nouveau and Alesund museum both worth a visit. A very walkable small city. Really enjoyed our two days here.Guest review byEdwinaAustralia - 10.0

What I liked about Ålesund is that it is a real city (...
What I liked about Ålesund is that it is a real city (population 59,000) with its own culture and not just a tourist trap consisting of hotels, cafés, and souvenir shops that exist soley for the sake of the cruise ships. Therefore there are several top restaurants in town (which are not cheap, however!) Very popular with the locals as well as out of town visitors. (Restaurants: Bro, Apotekergata No.5, & XL Diner) The historical district is extra-beautiful because of the famous 1904 fire and art nouveau reconstruction which adds special flavor to it unmatched elsewhere. Makes for some cute museums as well. The Aksla viewpoint is a manageable hike and well worth it (418 + steps)! Plenty to do for 2-3 days but a great place also to relax and hang out longer if you are in to boating, walking beautiful streets, side-walk cafés, local culture, etc. Easy access to Geiranger fjord and Troll's Road too!Guest review byRodneyUnited States

The room itself was large and clean. Good choice of breakfast, you might want to eat a little later to ensure any coach parties have finished. There is a ‘pay for’ car park underneath the hotel. Furniture was very comfortable, all facilities worked well. We wished we could have stayed more than one night. We received check-in information well in advance, which was great for us as we travel without a sim card and depend on wifi. The host was very responsive, but once again we never saw them.
