FAQs about hotels in San Francisco

An Icon of Liberalism

Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.

Surrounded by water on 3 sides, the city's spread over steep hills that make for great photo ops. And none better than the zig-zag Lombard Street, seen in many a film. Even more famous are San Fran's iconic trolleys climbing the hills – a little touristy, but still worth a ride.

In the middle of the bay, Alcatraz island is known for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t go inside, the views of the bridge and city are unparalleled.

Nowhere is life in San Francisco more laid-back than on the Pacific beaches. Rent a bike and head out there, passing through the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. Don't miss the clam chowder served in bread bowls! Chinatown also has a great selection of mid-range restaurants.

As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want a more independent stay in apartments, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something for everyone. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here!

This is our second visit in S.F. during the past two months. We meet many visitors from other countries who had very positive comments about S.F. We walked several miles around the city. We only saw one homeless person and the city was very clean.

I went to San Francisco when I was 16 years old and was really scared by it and hated it. After talking to many many people over the years who told me it was a fantastic fantastic city. I thought I'd go back now. I'm a little older and see what it was like and I must say I'm not too sure what my brain was thinking about when I was younger because I found everyone was indeed correct. The city is fantastic so many cool areas to go and visit from pier 39 to the hippie area. Golden Gate Park is fantastic too. I enjoyed the food and the entertainment in short if someone asked me to move there, I would leave my wife and my cat and go there immediately.

So many things to do and see.

So many things to do and see. Lot's of opportunity to experience many diverse cultural things. You can't go wrong with any of the food and sights. From Pier 39, Coit Tower, to the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset. We were pleasantly surprised at how clean the city was and at how friendly everyone was and so willing to assist tourists. We accidently went to Oakland. Very said and very scary. Definitely stay away from there.

Beautiful city and with lots to see and do.

Beautiful city and with lots to see and do. At least, you should stay 4 days and organize what you will do every day. Get a clipper card to move around the city with public transportation, which is organized and clean. My favorite places: Golden Gate Bridge, The Alcatraz tour, The cable car ride, The painted Ladies, Chinatown, The Golden Gate Park, Building Ferry Pier.

Make sure you bring warm clothes even in the summer as it gets really chilly. Ate at Fog Harbor. Food was really good. Went to Oracle Park. Always a good time at the ball park. Walked through the Warf. Always good to take a Cable Car ride. Go to Alcatraz is a must. Have an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista.

The Handlery Union Square Hotel is amazing! It’s right in the heart of Union Square, making it super convenient for shopping, restaurants, and everything San Francisco has to offer. The room was way more comfortable than I expected for an older hotel, and the bed was so cozy. The staff were fantastic—they let us check in early at 10 a.m. and gave us a late check-out at 1 p.m., which I’ve never experienced anywhere else. We stayed for seven days, and everything was great from start to finish. I’ll definitely stay here again!

We really enjoyed our stay! The hotel has a good old-fashioned vibe but everything was very clean and comfortable. The hotel is in the perfect location - close to everything and just a minute from the cable car station and 5 minutes walking to the Union Square. The stuff was also very friendly and welcoming. A nice touch of fresh sweet pastry every morning and unlimited selection of tea and coffee. Definitely recommend this place while visiting San Francisco!

The Hotel is geographicly very good located, close to cable car and union square (shoping) However it is also close to (almost in) Tenderloin which is an extremely bad area. There are lot of homeless people on the street outside the hotel, but this is the way San Francisco obviously wants their city to be, so it is the same almost every where... I never felt that the area was unsecure, so location must be considered to be good.

The location was really excellent. It was right at the heart of San Francisco's downtown area. The hotel was literally just a few steps away from the historic cable car station, the Union Square as well as those well renowned American shopping malls (Macy's, Westfield, Bloomingdales & Target). The room was big enough and was really clean. I don't need airconditioning for I was there during the cold spring season.

Is was very clean, the hotel smelled nice. There was a big common area with games and a bar which was very useful since everything closes at 9 in SF. It is very close to everything. I think this is the best location you can get as a tourist in San Francisco
