Simply going for an evening walk in the neighbourhood is a great way to get a feel for the place (on the back, quieter streets where all the homestays are, not the main drag obviously). We stayed in Ban Lac, it was great for accomodation, food, shoping and as a departure point for bike rides and trips. The owner of the place just recently opened this homestay and started learning English 5 months ago, but we didn't have any problem communicating. They go out their way to make you feel comfortable and are very helpful. They gave nice recommendations and it's also possible to rent a motorbike or bike. The dinner was great and generous. We arrived just as the sun was going down and had the most fabulous view across the rice paddies, from the balcony on our bungalow. The bungalow was spacious and well presented, tidy and clean.
