We have traveled to Japan many times, but this was our first time staying at a ryokan and it was so much more than we anticipated. Every staff member was so friendly, kind, and spoke English. We booked a corner suite with a private onsen. As others have mentioned, the check-in process is very individualized and leisurely. We were asked to sit down, they brought manju and tea, and a staff member (Reimi) explained everything to us. Reimi also escorted us to the suite and provided more information about it and the onsen. Dinner and breakfast were outstanding with multiple courses at each meal. Even though food is served in their dining hall, each party has it's own partitioned eating area (with shoji doors). Our son didn't feel well toward the end of dinner and missed dessert. We were surprised that our server saved his dessert and presented it to him at breakfast. As we checked out, the manager gifted us with temari ball trinkets. If you are visiting Matsumoto, Nagano I would highly recommend staying over night at Hotel Tamanoyu.

It's a beautiful, elegant hotel, with services that totally match the category. My room was large and comfortable, the hotel staff was kind, welcoming and professional, the breakfast exceptional. 7 minutes walking from the train station, a Family mart less then 5 minutes from the hotel and a lot of restaurants within 10 to 20 minutes walking from the hotel, plus the hotel itself has 2 restaurants, if I am not wrong. They include for their guest a visit to a nearby famous onsen (around 20 minutes with a shuttle).

Amazing place to stay. It is a pleasure to wake up in the morning and see the mountains (and castle) from the window. The interior of the hotel is very interesting and beautiful. It is very retro style and perfect for those who like retro. On the first floor there is a cafe with amazing coffee and delicious cakes. Very friendly stuff. Great atmosphere generally.

The bus stop for bus to Norikura snow wall is just outside, you can get tickets from concierge. Near to all the walking trails. Buffet style meals were suitable for our family. Nice indoor and outdoor onsen.

dinner was exquisite, breakfast was plentiful (including a real wasabi root to grate!), i had a room with a view of a forest, with one maple already turned red, the outside bath was nice, i used the hotel as a base to hike to Yonnen goya the next morning
