So I'm pretty smart: I booked for the Friday without noticing, then turned up on Saturday expecting a room. Well, let me tell you this: I was sitting in the hotel bar, minding my own business with a cup of coffee as I did some work, when a manager came over bearing a steaming plate of Portokalopita (orange cake) with ice cream. "They just made it in the kitchen," she said, depositing the plate and moseying away. Cake on the house = the best house. Then, at breakfast, I was tucking into my little continental platter, when my partner came over carrying a bowl of loukomades (tiny fried donuts). "A staff member told me they were fresh out of the fryer and I should have some immediately," she said with a look of confused wonder on her face. Isn't this how the world should be? Little random acts of kindness and accommodation when other people mess up? Wouldn't it be nice? Isn't it a more attractive alternative to the present-day dystopia we insist on investing in? You can bet your last loukomades I'll be coming here again.
