Overlooking the Shinano River in the heart of Niigata, Hotel Okura features a 15th-floor French restaurant and concierge services. It was like staying in a fancy 80s hotel at a backpackers price! The concierge walked me to the check-in and a porter carried my bags to the room, quite amazing for 5000-ish yen a night. The room was much bigger than in a modern hotel, it had proper timber furniture and there was a real bathroom with tiles and marble. The lobby is quite dazzling. It is a ten-minute walk to downtown with a peaceful path along the river in the other direction. I would go back in a heartbeat, I could even imagine living there!

The place was exceptional with friendly staff and services. The room and onsen were both well facilitated and clean. We were staying here for six nights and they prepared us different Japanese style dinners on every night, which were all amazingly good. The buffet breakfast was nice with good variety as well. We have had a great time here and skiing in Myoko.
