Place was also good value for money

Boasting an open-air bath, garden and views of mountain, Ikkoten is situated in Yufu, 50 km from Crasus Dome Oita. This ryokan offers free private parking and full-day security. The accommodation features a hot spring bath, free WiFi throughout the property and family rooms. I had the pleasure of spending 3 nights at Ikkoten with my three children, and our stay was nothing short of perfection. We were originally going to stay as a family of 5 at the KAI Yufuin but when an important business trip took my husband out of the vacation we had to quickly pivot because my ten year old son wouldn’t have been able to use the hot springs alone there. The reservable family onsen as well as our private indoor/outdoor onsen (we stayed in Kyara) allowed him to have as wonderful an experience as the girls and I. While the family onsen is great, we loved the convenience and privacy of our private one so much that we ended up using the family onsen only once. Notably, this is not a part of Japan where there’s a ton of English spoken, but the staff at Ikkoten had excellent English, which was super helpful for us as American visitors. They were super accommodating of the kids and provided samue (pajamas that are also worn to meals), geta (wooden sandals), and slippers in multiple sizes. The grounds are beautiful - a back drop of tall seeene forest (you can always here the serene sound of wind rushing through the leaves and pine needles), mountains at Mt Yufu on the other sides, and then a beautiful manicured garden. Our late March stay marked the beginnings of all kinds of blooms, and just standing outside you’d catch the perfumed scent of all kinds of beautiful flowers. The meals were absolutely incredible. The kids got wonderful multi-course meals of rice and tempura and miso soup (with a little bit of new and interesting dishes to try too). My 12 year old daughter was considered an adult by the resort, but when I requested kids meals for her, they were happy to pivot after 24 hours (the kaiseki meals were just too much for her 40kg frame!!). But those kaiseki meals were truly scrumptious. When booking the property for multiple nights, I hadn’t realized how overwhelming they could be, and I swear I gained like 10lbs just in those 3 days alone!!

SEKIYA RESORT Terrace Midoubaru is located a 15-minute drive from JR Beppu Station and boasts guestrooms with a semi open-air bath. Guests can soak in the hot spring bath. Private parking is available for an additional fee. This was the most amazing venue, best accommodation on our Japan trip and possibly on all our travels. The room, the hot spring bath, the food the staff were all outstanding. The evening meal was something I will never forget.

Located in Hita and only 39 km from Kinrinko Lake, Shinshiyo provides accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking. This 3-star ryokan offers a lift and luggage storage space. The ryokan features family rooms. - The room was huge. All inclusive. My room had the bathtub. River view was also nice. - The breakfast and dinner were delicious. We can see that they made a lot of effort in detail. - The hotel offers 6 onsen baths (4 inside the hotel; 2 outside which you need to walk down the stairs). - Staff were super friendly.

Yufuin-Sanso Waremokou offers large Japanese-style rooms boasting an open-air cypress hot spring bath, sweeping nature and city views and a massage chair. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby, and pets are welcome at a charge. Amazing service and a beautiful room with private onsen! Will definitely come back

Situated in Beppu in the Oita region with Yama Jigoku and Hells of Beppu nearby, 別府 鉄輪温泉 萬力屋別館 ManrikiyaBekkan Beppu Kannawa offers accommodation with access to a hot spring bath. It is located 26 km from Crasus Dome Oita and features a 24-hour front desk. The ryokan provides rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. The lady owner was just so nice. I felt welcomed right away. I also appreciated the kinds words with the breakfast. The room was also very nice, with a futon and tatami, and you also get to have a reserved time to access the Onsen. Location is also very good. Walkable distance to most of the Beppu hells and the two remaining ones can be reached by bus. Bus stations are nearby, whether you want to go the further hells, Beppu station or Fukuoka.

Suikomareso is situated in Hita and offers a shared lounge. There is an in-house restaurant, plus free private parking and free WiFi are available. The accommodation features luggage storage space and a concierge service for guests. Awesome authentic Japanese house. Well designed and appointed.

Right on Beppu Bay, Umino Hotel Hajime offers public hot spring baths and free WiFi. Rooms feature a traditional Japanese decor and a private bathroom with hot spring water.

New Matsumi Hotel is just a 10-minute walk away from Beppu Station and a 10-minute drive from Beppu Museum of Art and Beppu-Kaihama sand baths. Takegawara Hot Springs famous for its sand bath is a 5-minute walk, while Umitamago Aquarium is a 15-minute drive, Harmony Land is a 30-minute drive and African Safari is a 30-minute drive away. Yufuin Hot Springs is a 40-minute drive away. Great location, helpful staff, wonderful views from the rooftop public bath. Incredibly happy with the room and value for money. Wish we could have stayed at least one more night.
