They directed us to hikes and restaurants, and provided an excellent breakfast, including espresso made to order and delicious pancakes and homemade croissants. The property has many outdoor seating areas with views to the plains below. The room was clean, modern and comfortable.

We were met at the door by our smiling hostess, and immediately felt at home! Our room was perfect, and Teresa had homemade treats, coffee and tea available each day in the nearby kitchen. The location was great for meal options, access to places of interest to us in VNdeM, and the beach. Would definitely stay here again!

Our stay at Casa Az-Zagal Hotel was absolutely wonderful. The hotel itself is like a step back in time, with each room styled uniquely to reflect the charm of a traditional Portuguese home. It’s full of character but still manages to be incredibly comfortable and inviting. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Gonçalo, the General Manager. He showed us around and shared the hotel’s history, which added so much depth to our stay. He was friendly, approachable, and clearly passionate about the place, which really set the tone for the entire experience. The hotel’s atmosphere is incredibly peaceful, and the pool area, though small, is beautifully designed - a perfect spot to relax and take in the serene surroundings. But let’s talk about the food - because it was the absolute highlight of our stay. Trust me, as someone who’s a serious foodie and has eaten at countless restaurants, this is not a compliment I give lightly: it was the best food I’ve ever had. The head chef is not just talented but also incredibly warm and passionate. Each dish was a masterpiece, rooted in traditional Portuguese flavors, and the chef took the time to explain the story behind each one. We even had a great chat and discovered he’s a Manchester fan (great taste!) Every bite was an experience, and the meals are something we’ll be dreaming about for years to come. Casa Az-Zagal is a truly special place. From the welcoming staff to the peaceful setting and the unforgettable food, it’s a stay we’ll always remember. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels both authentic and luxurious, this is it - you won’t regret it!

Two weary cyclists arrived for one night. We were delighted! Ines—one of the owners— is warm and welcoming. Our room was splendid—comfortable, lovely, overlooking the beautiful pool. Breakfast was perfect—obrigado Patricia! We liked this beautiful Solar ( a former school where Ines was a schoolgirl—how cool!) so much that we stayed one more night! My friend left for work in Lisboa and I stayed for a third night! One night turned into three because it is so delightful! I have cycled 94,000+km around the world and have stayed at well over 1000+ hotels around the world on every continent except Antarctica—Solar Dos Frades is one of the best! Obrigado Ines!
