Hoja Grande is one of the neighbourhoods in the northern municipality of Garafía on the island of La Palma. It is the base of the highest territory on the island, El Roque de los Muchachos, the highest point on the island at 2,426 metres, headquarters of the IAC in La Palma, which, together with its headquarters in Tenerife, hosts the largest network of telescopes in the Northern Hemisphere, bringing together more than seventy scientific institutions from nineteen countries, including Spain. This set of state-of-the-art instruments is part of the European Northern Observatory, better known as ENO. The road that climbs up to Roque de los Muchachos passes through it to the north, as there is another road access via Mirca in Santa Cruz de la Palma.
This neighbourhood consists of two locations, separated by the Barranco de Oropesa, which are El Bailadero and Hoya Grande itself. Its main activity is livestock farming, mainly goats, and agriculture, making it a privileged area for growing grapes, mainly on the slopes of El Lomo de la Ciudad and Lomo de Jerónimo. The best-known variety for its nobility is Albillo, which is also produced in the neighbourhoods of Catela and El Castillo. It produces a wine with broad, balanced fruity flavours, with a slight sweetness, clean and fresh with a long finish, evoking the aroma of the Atlantic that bathes its geography.
Recently, old rural houses have also been restored and adapted to modern times, prepared for comfortable living. These are then put into operation, giving rise to an increasingly important economic source that makes it possible for outsiders to enjoy landscapes and natural environments with significant anthropological and social value, while also serving as a complementary means of increasing the area's economic income.
