Finca Canopus is located at an altitude of 900m on the sunny west side of La Palma, in the El Pinar neighborhood above the village of El Jesus. You can shop in La Punta or Tijarafe (10 minutes, several supermarkets and an organic store), and dine in one of the restaurants on the LP-1, the main road that runs 1.5km further down. The nearest family-friendly beach is Tazacorte (25 minutes). Guests who want to go to the beach every day will find better-suited vacation homes on La Palma. Guests who enjoy nature and the view over the sea are in the right place at Finca Canopus. In addition, there is a wonderful starry sky and very beautiful paths for walking and hiking. A neighboring house is rented to a quiet retiree, but the local situation is such that you don't run into each other. The other houses are further away, and you enjoy absolute peace.
The holiday home has two bedrooms. The northern bedroom is accessible from the living room and has two separate beds that can be put together to form a double bed. The southern bedroom has its entrance door to the winter garden and is therefore a little more private; it has a double bed. Both bedrooms have private bathrooms (renovated in 2024) with shower and toilet (one of which has a bidet function). The living/dining room with an open kitchen is spacious and has windows to the east and west with a view over the sea. It has heating and air conditioning, as well as a fireplace if it gets a little cooler in the evening in winter. The house dates from the 1990s and the windows are double-glazed, the floor is made of oak planks. The kitchen was newly installed in 2024 and has a microwave/oven, induction stove, fridge/freezer, and moka pot. Fast internet (fiber optic connection) is available via WLAN and Ethernet sockets. A 50" TV hangs in the living room, with TV programs received via the internet (no satellite TV), a Blu-Ray player and a sound bar. There is a washing machine (accessible from outside) and an outdoor shower.
The finca is named after the star Canopus in the constellation Carina, the second brightest star in the sky. It is not visible from Europe, but in La Palma, it shines low in the south during winter, visible from the southern bedroom. The scientist Averroes observed Canopus from Marrakech in 1153. Since Canopus was not visible from his hometown of Cordoba in Spain, he concluded that the Earth is round.
Access to the finca is via the public road network. If you are coming from Santa Cruz or Los Llanos, the turn-off from the LP-1 onto Camino el Pinar is about 100 meters after the restaurant Cerveceria Isla Verde (where the nearest bus stop is also located). It then goes up the hill for about 3.5km. The last few meters are a bit steeper and have potholes, but not unusual for La Palma and easily navigated in first gear with a normal car. However, if you are an unexperienced driver, then the finca is not ideal for you.
The finca is connected to the public power grid, but generates almost all of its electricity with a photovoltaic system installed in 2023 with a battery. We ask guests to shift their electricity consumption to the daytime hours during the winter months to save public electricity (which is mainly generated from oil on La Palma).
