The city of Gáldar, head of one of the ancient kingdoms of the island before the Conquest of Gran Canaria, shows part of its ancient past in the Archaeological Park of the Cueva Pintada, in the centre of the city, where one of the main findings of cave art in the Atlantic area can be found.
The city centre, declared a Historic Site in 1981, preserves several remarkable buildings. The Templo Matriz de Santiago de Gáldar, one of the most beautiful in the Canary Islands, is considered to be the bridge between the Baroque style and the early Neoclassicism of the archipelago. Interesting works of art are preserved in the church, such as the Pila Verde, where the defeated Canary Islanders were first baptised after the conquest of the island.
The old Town Hall, built on the site of an old 18th century building, houses one of the oldest examples of the Drago tree in Gran Canaria, documented as early as 1718. Annexed to the Town Hall is the Municipal Theatre, built in 1912 to replace the old theatre founded by Isabel II.
The so-called Plaza Grande is one of the best examples of a 19th century Alameda in the Canary Islands, with its centenary specimens of Laureles de Indias and Araucarias. The Antonio Padrón Museum, just a few metres away, houses more than a hundred works by one of the most outstanding artists of the avant-garde movements in the archipelago.
Gáldar is one of the places with the largest number of beaches and natural pools in the north of Gran Canaria. The picturesque beach of Sardina stands out, with several restaurants and a small fishing port. It is frequently used by divers, especially for the convenience of equipping themselves and starting the dive from its fishing port. One of the main attractions of this spot for divers is the night dive in the vicinity of the fishing port dyke.
