San Cristóbal de La Laguna is located in the northeast of Tenerife, between the Anaga massif and the mountain of La Esperanza. On its coast, in the north of the municipality, are the agricultural districts of Tejina and Valle de Guerra, as well as the tourist resorts of Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo. In Anaga, the hamlets of El Batán and Las Carboneras, among other rural settlements, stand out. In the centre of the municipality, in an extensive plain, stands the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, declared a Cultural Asset and World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. It was the first colonial city without walls to conserve practically intact its original 15th-century layout, which served as a model for many colonial cities in America. Its streets, marked by an attractive commercial, gastronomic and leisure activity, are full of monuments and historic buildings. The Guanche name for the area where La Laguna is located was Aguere, a term that is still used today to refer to the municipality. It is also known as the City of the Adelantados, as it was here that the Adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo and his descendants lived.
