Its origins go back to Roman times, judging by the Roman remains found in the area. And to underline the importance of the Romans for the development of the neighborhood, keep in mind that it is believed that Triana owes its name to the Roman colony founded by the Emperor Trajan.
Since then, the district of Triana has been the birthplace of artists, sailors, bullfighters and potters (such as the famous Justa and Rufina, patron saints of the city, who sold pottery in a market stall in Triana.
But it was not until the reign of Caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf when the first bridge of boats was built, in the year 1171. The bridge, which would be the only one to connect the two banks of the Guadalquivir for some 700 years, was made of simple planks of wood arranged on thirteen boats (hence the name Puente de las Barcas). In spite of being quite rudimentary, this bridge was the revulsive one that impelled the commercial and vital relation with the other margin of the Guadalquivir, the present center of the capital.
Triana takes its name from the old homonymous traditional neighborhood, located next to the Guadalquivir river, to the other side of the historical core.
