City of Art and History, Vannes is located at the gates of the Gulf of Morbihan, in the south of Brittany, on the estuary of the Marle. You will first admire the medieval ramparts, among the best preserved in Brittany, which give rise to a charming walk along the Garenne, a path that runs alongside them, punctuated by gardens and pretty wash houses. After discovering the port, with its tree-lined quays, including the Rabine quay, go through the 17th century Saint-Vincent gate, which was built to link the port and the historic district: you will enter the old town through a street lined with old buildings, private mansions and half-timbered houses. Go up to the Place des Lices where the 1912 market hall awaits you. Dedicated to food products, they welcome you on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sunday mornings, as well as on Saturdays all day. On the events side, we celebrate the Historical Festivals of Vannes in mid-July. Jazz is honored during Jazz en Ville, in July and August. Vannes is an ideal starting point for an exploration of the Gulf of Morbihan by boat: about forty islands are listed, except for islets, each with its own characteristics.
