Neighbourhood description
The Gite is in a small rural hamlet which is a short 5 minutes car journey from the Roman village of Chateaupopnsac that has all modern conveniences including Boulangerie, supermarket, bars and restaurants and even a museum.
The beautiful unspoilt River Gartempe is a short 10 minute, downhill walk through the woods from the Hamlet. There are footpaths along the river side upstream and downstream.
The local area is great for walking, fishing, cycling etc. The River Gartemps, a beautiful unspoilt river valley, is a 10 min walk through the woods.
There are also two leisure lakes within a twenty minute drive. St Pardoux lake, during the summer, provides all water sports including sailing, canoeing, paddle boats, paddle boarding, a water park with slides etc and water-skiing. There is also A Go Ape activity at the lake which includes zip lines across the water.
The second lake is at Bessines-sur-Gartemps and has a beach area, childrens play park and a bar / restaurant.
The area is one of great historic interest spanning many centuries. There are a variety of places to visit in the footsteps of Richard the Lionheart ranging from Coussac Bonneval and the Chateau de Bonneval to Arnac-Pompadour, which boasts a fine chateau. We are also close to the Blond Mountains, which have marvellous walks, and the ancient village of Montmartre, where an art or antique show is often in progress.
The nearest large city - 35 minutes drive - is Limoges, 'The Red City', famed for its porcelain and enamel work. It is a wonderful mixture of the old and the new.
The memorial site of the infamous WWII massacre is at Oradour -sur-Glane.
Poitiers is a one-hour and a half's journey away - home of Eleanor of Aquitaine, site of many beautiful Romanesque churches, and, by way of complete contrast, there is Futuroscope.
