Moffat, a town in the Annandale valley, grew from a village in the 17th century to a spa town in the 18th and 19th centuries due to the belief that the sulphurous waters of the Moffat Well had healing properties. Many of the town's structures are from this era, and the current Town Hall was first constructed as a bath house. The original well is still accessible, and it is located 1.5 miles outside of town in the countryside. Along with its reputation as a spa town, Moffat's importance increased as a result of the wool trade and its use as a stopover on routes between England and Scotland. The town is now quite popular with tourists, and it's not just because of the breath-taking scenery that makes for fantastic walking, cycling, and fishing options.
