The bustling market town of Ludlow is just a short drive away. With a photogenic town centre as well as the 11th century Ludlow Castle standing proudly on a cliff overlooking the River Teme, it’s a pleasant day out as well as a good base for walking and cycling. The town is also a foodie favourite, thanks to all the great local produce – if you’re here in September don’t miss the Ludlow Food and Drink Festival.
For a different type of atmosphere, Bewdley is an attractive Georgian town that’s right on the banks of the River Severn. Bewdley Museum showcases the local crafts and traditional way of life of the Marches.
While you’re at Bewdley, why not hop onto the Severn Valley Steam Railway? The line links Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, a distance of sixteen miles or so. It’s a full-size, standard-gauge railway, but the emphasis is on steam!
Near to Bewdley is the West Midland Safari Park, home to over 165 species of exotic animals. You can drive through the safari park to see the animals, or go on foot and enjoy the small theme park here.
Stokesay Castle is a fortified medieval manor house, built back in the 13th century, and it gives you a real feel of what medieval life was like. The views are stunning, and the tearoom’s not bad too.
Ruins don’t come much more magnificent than this. Witley Court is an Italianate mansion built in the seventeenth century. Wander through the glorious gardens past the monumental fountains, and on into magical woodland where the children will come across a wilderness play area.
If you simply fancy a stroll through beautiful countryside, Broad Meadows puts you in a rural idyll, with the rolling landscape of Shropshire and the Welsh Hills in the distance. Clee Hill is closest, the most southerly of the Shropshire Hills.
