A heritage site in its own right, Cragend Farm is located next to National Trust property Cragside. As seen on Matt Bakers travels with Mum & Dad Series 3 . We offer either the Large Luxury Super King room with TV Sofa, Ensuite Bath and Shower Room (Armstrong Wing) or the King Size room (West Room) with high beams full of character and history with ensuite shower, wc and basin. Travel cots available for either room. Extra mattresses available for Armstrong Wing for two children on request. Both rooms have WIFI. Dogs welcome. Cragend Farm sits quietly on the edge of the famous Cragside Estate, 25 miles north of Newcastle, and has been a farm since the 16th century. It was re-modelled and transformed by Northumbrian Industrialist Lord William Armstrong of Cragside in 1880’s with stone from the Cragend Quarry. Now owned by Shaun and Lou Renwick the farm is being given a new lease of life. The farm has stunning views of the Northumberland Countryside.
Continuing to harness Cragend’s surrounding natural resources, heating and hot water onsite are generated by wood burning systems, including the Esse Range for cooking. Delicious food is always on the go at Cragend, with Shaun & Lou’s home cooked breakfasts. Cragend free range eggs are also available to take home. The land around the farm buildings is receiving much needed love and attention for woodland, wildlife, like squirrels and deer. We have visiting geese at certain times of the year. The Black Burn flows to the east side of the boundary and is a vision of bluebells and primroses in Spring with wild garlic and watercress in profusion. The banks of the River Coquet are very special for numerous reasons, the flora and fauna are exemplary, and the salmon and trout fishing are a treat only available to a special few. We have Grown in Britain status for our woodland.
The farm, originally owned by The Duke of Northumberland, of Alnwick Castle and Syon House, was rented out for many centuries until Lord Armstrong bought it in 1860’s, as part of a grand scheme to create a Model Farm to showcase his innovative water powered hydraulic machinery that worked threshing machines and milling devices. Evidence of this 19th century cutting edge technology is still visible at Cragend. Rothbury emerged as a relatively important town in the historic district of Coquetdale because of its situation at a crossroads over a ford along the River Coquet. Turnpike roads leading to Newcastle upon Tyne, Alnwick, Hexham and Morpeth allowed for an influx of families and the enlargement of the settlement during the Middle Ages. Today, the town is used as a staging point for recreational walking. Landmarks in and around Rothbury include the Victorian era mansion Cragside, the Simonside Hills and Northumberland National Park. Nowadays it plays host to Music and Food festivals with lots to see and do at National Trust Cragside. Alnwick, Morpeth Hexham Holy Island are near by with amazing beaches. Northumberland Dark Skies are a sight to be seen.
