The former Kallin School and adjoining teacher’s residence have been completely renovated to a high standard and are now one large residence and we are delighted to say we are ready to welcome guests.
This property is located in the township of Kallin, on the Island of Grimsay, North Uist. This was the village school from 1908 until its closure and was for many years the focal point of the community.
The former Kallin schoolhouse is in a lovely spot in the shelter of ‘Creag-an Fhithich’, which translates to ‘ravens’ rock’ and the ravens still come here to nest, as they have probably done for hundreds of years. A shallow bay at the front of the schoolhouse is ideal for safe water activates when the tide is in, and lovely to walk across when tide is out.
Throughout the property, there are large windows and high ceilings from its former function. This creates light and spacious rooms with great views and a relaxing atmosphere.
The property has three large double rooms (one of which can be made into a twin room); two of these rooms have en-suites. A cot is available in one of the rooms for those with young children. One of the bedrooms has a lovely adjoining conservatory with views across to Rona Island and is a perfect space to watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee.
The house has a large open plan kitchen/ dining area and sitting room, with great views across the bay.
The main living room has a wood burning stove and plenty of seating space for all residents to get together of an evening.

The island of Grimsay sits between the Isle of Benbecula to the south and North Uist to the North. It is approximately 10 minutes’ drive from the airport in Benbecula; approximately 20 minutes drive from Lochmaddy and 40 minutes’s drive from Lochboisdale, which are the two ferry ports. Grimsay is ideally located for exploring Uist and is a great spot for those that enjoy outdoor actives such as cycling, kayaking walking, and birdwatching.
The island of Grimsay is a fishing community with its own busy little harbour, only 300 meters from the Kallin schoolhouse. Here on the pier, you can find the popular Namara seafood café, which serves fresh locally caught seafood. Boat trips are also available from this harbour. Within short walking distance you can find the Kallin Shellfish fish shop, with a great selection of ready to eat locally caught shellfish as well as live lobsters and langoustine, for those brave enough to cook their own!
