Local Area information
Beaumaris revolves around its technically advanced castle which was begun in 1295 by order of Edward I. The castle was built on new ground at the ‘fair marsh’ (or ‘beau marais’ in Norman-French) which gave the town its name.
The lovely historic town of Beaumaris has lots to offer. Janet Bell’s Gallery of happy, seaside artwork, a pebble’s throw from the beach and castle, is well worth a visit. The Loft Restaurant, an elegant and tranquil eating house occupying the eaves above the oldest part of The Bull Inn is a stylish setting for fine dining. Overlooking the Menai Strait and the Snowdonia mountain range, sitting outdoors and enjoying the view, the Pier House Café and Bistro is a great place to meet and eat. Beaumaris has many other good places to eat, interesting attractions and a fine selection of individual shops.
There are plenty of attractions in the area including two golf courses, dinghy sailing, fishing trips and boat cruises to Puffin Island, boat cruises down the Menai Strait - not to mention the beautiful coastline with its wonderful sandy beaches such as Llanddona, Red Wharf Bay and Benllech. The Anglesey Coastal Path will take you to the historic site of Penmon and Puffin Island then around the headland at Black Point and on to Llanddona. There is a network of lanes for cycling between Beaumaris and Llanddona with great views of the coast.
Beaumaris has a programme of events all year round – provisional dates: Anglesey Half Marathon (2 March), a music festival (23-26 May), Menai Strait Regatta (28 July to 9 August), Medieval Festival (23-25 August Bank Holiday), a bonfire party, Victorian Christmas street party (November), New Year’s Eve fireworks (31 December).
