George & Rachel set up the tearoom in one room of their home in 2004, with George as front of house and Rachel cooking. It soon became known for its good food and friendly and homely character and within 3 years the Tea Guild named it the Top Tea Place in the UK. Now the tearoom occupies the ground floor and George and Rachel live in a new house behind the tearoom. They are helped in the B&B and tearoom by lovely staff headed by manager Krisztián and his wife Kat who runs the kitchen. If you need help planning your stay we are happy to share our local knowledge and answer your questions.

Ely is a delightful little city, with more than enough to ensure an enjoyable stay. Here each of our suites has its own private sitting-room where you can relax in comfort. The tearoom below with its beautiful gardens is open 5 days a week – you can lunch there or have afternoon tea served in your room.
Because we have lived there ourselves for many years it hasn’t been hard to ensure that the B&B is homely and comfortable. Most of the pictures, books and pieces of antique furniture in the B&B rooms were family favourites. Though both our suites are comfy it has to be said that the Brewery Suite is exceptional. As well as a roomy bedroom where you can watch life on the river without getting out of bed, there is a large bathroom with a free-standing bath as well as a shower, and best of all a huge sitting room to yourselves with more views over the river.
The Cottage suite also has its own sitting room, and a shower and separate loo. its bedroom overlooking the back garden is particularly peaceful. In each suite a sofa bed can accommodate up to two more guests.
The great attraction in Ely is the fantastic cathedral. There are plenty of good places to eat and drink; an array of independent shops includes a great bookshop and the biggest antiques centre in East Anglia. From the B&B one can walk along the river in either direction and enjoy the rich bird-life – herons, grebes, cormorants and swans and, if you are keen-eyed, kingfishers.
Further afield are Newmarket with its horses and fine Horse-racing Museum, Cambridge with its colleges and world-class museums and the wonderful collection of planes etc at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Norfolk and Suffolk are not far and London is an hour and 15mins away by train.

You’ll find us and our prize-winning tearoom (open Wed-Sunday) in a lovely Georgian building overlooking the river and peaceful quayside in the prettiest part of Ely. Everything – shops, a great bookshop, pubs, restaurants, museums, station - is within easy walking distance. East Anglia’s biggest antiques centre is next door. The fabulous cathedral is 10 mins away, across the town centre. From here, take a country walk by the river without crossing a road; in summer take a river trip.
