The Cheese Room at Upper Clavelshay Farm is our self-contained guest suite. The Cheese Room is the first floor (14 steps up) of what used to be the farmhouse dairy, now converted into a stylish retreat.
We are slowly doing up the house and grounds, and can't wait to welcome you to share our private spot at the foot of the Quantocks.
We are in the hamlet of Clavelshay and accessed via country lanes but 15 mins drive from junctions 24 or 25 of the M5 and 15 mins from Taunton.
Built in 1906 by Lord Portman for the Hestercombe house estate Manager, Upper Clavelshay Farm is a secluded rural retreat surrounded by 4 acres of coniferous woodland, perfect for a peaceful getaway.
While The Cheese Room forms part of our home, you have exclusive use of the self contained suite which comprises a large entrance hall, staircase to The Cheese Room which has a king size bed, lounge and dining area, there is no kitchen yet! but the room has a microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge. One step down and you are in the dressing room and bathroom with large walk in shower. The house has a drive in/out driveway. On arrival drive up the right side as this will lead you to your own front door and parking space.
We moved to Somerset 4 years ago from London to start enjoying the beautiful countryside the UK has to offer. The house is situated in a location that you can simply walk out of the gate and be walking, cycling, hiking through woodland or across open fields or just look up and see the buzzards soaring.
During your stay there is always someone around to answer any queries you may have during your stay, but otherwise we like to leave you to your own devices to explore the beautiful surrounding area. We are just a text, call or knock away.
Clavelshay is superbly situated at the foot of the Quantock Hills AONB for a range of outdoor activities including cycling, walking, bird watching, painting and hiking. As well as being moments away from local footpaths into the Quantocks and Forestry Commission sites.
Some local attractions are:
Hestercombe House & Gardens - Great for strolling through the famous Edwardian garden or walking the landscaped grounds. Then lunch or afternoon tea.
Kings Cliff
Great place to walk and experience the local wildlife.
National Trust - Fyne Court
Beautiful woodland walking, with a fantastic stream for kids to play in. Then tea and cake in the old court yard.
Mary Shelley's inspiration for her book "Frankenstein"
Somerset Space Walk
Great way to learn about the solar system as you walk down the Bridgwater & Taunton canal.
Glastonbury Tor
Famous landmark with great views of the surrounding Somerset levels.
There are some excellent pubs a couple of miles from the house and good takeaways in the nearby village of North Petherton (8 minutes drive away) along with a Tesco metro. We can even recommend a fantastic mobile fish & chip service in Monkton Heathfield on a Tuesday.
