Neighbourhood information

Kingswear The most prominent feature is Kingswear Castle which was built between 1491 and 1502, as a coastal artillery tower for use with heavy cannon. The village itself is home to several attractive 19th century villas which have panoramic views of Dartmouth harbour and the river Dart and the imposing Britiannia Naval College on the hill above the town. You will not find Kingswear mentioned in the Doomsday Book, but there is reason to believe that Kingston, which is on the plateau above Kingswear, dates from Saxon times with some evidence of Stone Age and Roman occupation. After the conquest Kingston passed into the de Vasci family and the first documentary mention of Kingswear was around 1170 when Williams de Vinci gave half the land at Kingswear to the incumbent of the local church which was a chapel of ease to the parish church at Brixham. The name Kingswear may come from the tidal mill at the head of the creek with its system of weirs. A ferry to Dartmouth operated from at least 1365 from Kittery Point, the western most tip of Kingswear and nearest to Dartmouth. The railway came to Kingswear in 1864 and was used by those who came here to wait to sail to South Africa and elsewhere. During the Second World War the Royal Dart Hotel became HMS Cicala and headquarters of the 15th Flotilla which made journeys to Brittany to equip the French Resistance. Beaches Brixham – Breakwater beach, Shoalstone Pool. Both in the town with parking. St Marys Bay – large sandy beach (no facilites) a walk from the car park. Mann Sands a large sandy beach, 30 minutes walk from the car park. Broadsands beach (between Brixham and Paignton) a long sandy beach with an area of parkland behind suitable for ball games and barbeques. Parking. Goodrington Sands (Paignton) large sandy beach, good facilites, water park, park area behind the beach with boating lake. Parking. Dartmouth side of the river The nearest beach is Blackpool Sands, near Stoke Fleming,...
