Eccles-on-Sea was an ancient fishing village in north-east Norfolk, which has now virtually all swept into the North Sea. Its beautiful beach stretches for miles in both directions. A couple of miles away (as the crow flies and on foot - but five miles in the car) is Sea Palling beach, a popular Blue Flag Norfolk beach which is not too overcrowded, yet has amusements, cafes and amenities set back from the beach, making it an ideal family destination.
A little further on from Sea Palling is Waxham Beach, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a fantastic spot for spotting seal pups. Also make sure to visit Horsey, a real winter attraction from the end of October until late February for seal spotting. Close by is Ingham, a small, rural village with a butcher and a farm shop and the The Ingham Swan a rural, 14th-century former coaching inn, which offers fine dining and presents award winning food in a relaxed setting. Be sure to book, this fine dining pub is popular. The Broads National Park starts less than five miles away, with endless opportunities for wildlife watching, boating, cycling and Broads market town of Stalham has restaurants, pubs and shops and superstore. Stalham is one of the major starting points of Norfolk Broads boating holidays, so it’s very easy to hire a day, picnic boat or electric boat by the hour, half day or full day. There is a bookable private swimming pool a few miles away, which also has a beauty salon and hairdresser there.
The largest of the Broads, NWT Hickling Broad, a year-round haven for wildlife, is only nine miles away. Hickling is home to the common crane, bittern, marsh harrier, bearded tit and cetti’s warbler. In winter large numbers of marsh harriers roost in the reedbed and merlin and hen harrier are also regular. Barn owl is almost guaranteed and you may see kingfisher if you are lucky. Interesting mammals include the introduced Chinese water deer, red deer and hard-to-see otters. Amongst the many insects are...
