Nestled in the heart of Hilton village, The Old Post Office is a gem of a cottage, restored expertly to provide an independent, self-contained base for holiday and business guests. It is located in the grounds of Hilton Hall, a Jacobean house that was the Cambridge home of the Bloomsbury set. Do look at the village website to learn more.
From the entrance hallway and cloakroom there is an orangery, with cane sofas, leading outside to a patio and small garden, and the historic Hilton Hall and its extensive gardens. From the orangery there is a comfortable sitting room, complete with desk, bed-settee sofa and equipped with TV and wifi. There is a wood-burning stove, though underfloor heating keeps the cottage warm and cosy. Behind the sitting room there is a well-equipped kitchen and dining area, affording independence and privacy for meal-times.
Upstairs there is a large double bedroom, with a king-sized bed and single bed (can be removed for a cot). It has an en suite shower-room, and windows to front and rear.
Hilton is beautiful, friendly, with a large cricket green, several lovely ponds, a famous turf maze, a shop / post office and pub.
The Goodridge family took over the renovation of the Listed Hilton Hall and its grounds in 2009. The cottage at the edge of the property was derelict and was eventually restored using traditional materials to create a fine self-catering cottage which has been operational since early 2013. It has continued to be a delight for our many guests from all over the world. I run the cottage myself, personally welcoming guests and ensuring they are comfortable with everything provided, and giving advice on places to go, what to see and do if needed. It is so heartening to hear people's reactions and see their joy in using the cottage - a lovely reward for the conviction and effort we put into its restoration.
Surrounded by farms, Hilton is small settlement of about 425 houses on what was a drover route to the market town of St Ives, 5 miles away. Unusually it has 10 listed properties, including the church of St Mary Magdalene, Hilton Hall, The Grange, Hilton House and The Manor. Secluded and quiet as Hilton is, the many attractions and facilities of Cambridgeshire, London and East Anglia are within easy reach by car and train. St Ives, on the river Ouse, has a swimming pool, a museum, river trips, several restaurants, supermarkets, regular markets of different sorts and is positioned on the guided busway which takes you into the heart of Cambridge. We have several lovely National Trust and English Heritage properties nearby too. In the busy city of Cambridge, there is a host of attractions of all sorts - museums, art galleries, river punting, Arts Theatre, West End Concert Hall, the beautiful buildings of the many colleges - and much more besides.
