Οι Αρχάνες είναι μία όμορφη κωμόπολη κτισμένη σε υψόμετρο περίπου 400 μέτρων, στο μέσο μιας λεκάνης που την διαρρέει ο χείμαρρος Καίρατος και την χωρίζει σε δυο άνισα μέρη. Βρίσκεται στο βορειοανατολικό άκρο της κοιλάδας που σχηματίζεται από το όρος Γιούχτας, που έχει υψόμετρο 811 μ. Απέχει 14 χιλιόμετρα από την πόλη του Ηρακλείου και μόλις 7 χιλιόμετρα από το μινωικό ανάκτορο της Κνωσού. Το "πολύχρωμο" αυτό χωριό έχει βραβευτεί σε διαγωνισμό της Ευρωπαικής Ένωσης και αποτελεί παράδειγμα προς μίμηση, όσον αφορά την οικιστική του ανάπτυξη.
Ο σημερινός κύριος οικισμός ονομάζεται Επάνω Αρχάνες κι έτσι ξεχωρίζει από το συνοικισμό των Κάτω Αρχανών που βρίσκεται σε απόσταση ενός χιλιομέτρου βορειότερα.Τα κυριότερα προϊόντα των Αρχανών είναι σταφίδα - σουλτανίνα, εξαιρετικής ποιότητας κρασί από διάφορες ποικιλίες και επίσης αρίστης ποιότητας ελαιόλαδο. Επίσης, καλλιεργούνται αρωματικά φυτά: δίκταμος, θυμάρι, φασκομηλιά.
