Sutivan (tal. San Giovanni della Brazza) is a village and settlement on the Croatian island of Brac. It has an area of 22 km² and in 2004 it had 747 inhabitants. History The roots of the village date back to Roman times. In the 6th century, the early Christian basilica of St. John (Sveti Ivan) was built, from which the name of the village is derived. The basilica was later destroyed, but a church was built in its place in 1579. The development of the village in the 15th century was due to refugees from the mainland who found shelter from the Turks. At the beginning of the 18th century, the village had about 250 inhabitants, and in 1890 it even had 1,875 inhabitants. The main source of their livelihood was agriculture - especially the cultivation of vines and olives. In 1893, Sutivan's wine production was 9 300 hl and olive oil 3 500 hl, a quarter of the island's production. Are you a fan of adventure and cycling? The long-term efforts of the islanders have paid off, because today Brač has 25 well-maintained bike trails that together make 1026 kilometers.
