Loughrea, a lively market town (population about 5,000), has a great selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and things to do and see.
Loughrea in the Irish language can be translated as Baile Locha Riach which means Town of the Grey Lake. Loughrea people are very proud of their lake. The water quality is excellent. It is one of the few inland lakes to receive the Blue Flag award for its swimming facilities and is one of only 12 wild brown trout fisheries left in Europe. Facilities along its shores include picnic areas, fully accessible walkways, children's playgrounds, adults exercise area and tennis courts.
The town itself was founded by the Normans in 1236. A number of medieval features still survive. The most significant is the town moat. This is the only functioning medieval moat in Ireland. Visitors can see it at its best in the beautiful linear park known as The Walks. The interior decoration of St Brendan's Cathedral took place during a time when there was a renewed interest in Celtic art. Its 26 stained glass windows are world renowned.
