Company information

The history of Jamtara Wilderness Camp and the current tiger conservation campaign in India are connected and date back to the 1960s, when Kailash Sankhala first voiced concerns about the terrible level of tiger poaching that was threatening to wipe out this magnificent creature. In 1973, shortly after leading the nation's first tiger census, Shrimati Indira Gandhi chose him to lead the Project Tiger effort. He later became the director of India's Project Tiger, the world's largest conservation initiative at the time. Kailash Sankhala's son, Pradeep Sankhala, instilled in him a love of the forest and gave it a new direction by fusing tourism and conservation. Amit Sankhala, a member of the third generation, has continued this history. As nature tourism developed and conservation confronted more complex issues like habitat loss, encroachment on natural habitat, and rising human-wildlife conflicts, he inherited a new set of difficulties. Amit continues to address these challenges, as well as local community issues through responsible tourism, where communities work together as partners and local business is promoted.
