With the fall of the Roman Empire, Ortigia underwent a series of invasions and dominations, passing under the control of the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and Spanish. Each culture left an indelible mark on the architecture and local traditions. Under Arab rule, Ortigia became an important center of trade and culture, while in the Norman period, the city was enriched with religious buildings and palaces. Ortigia, the island that constitutes the historic center of Syracuse, underwent significant transformations and influences during the Bourbon period, which lasted from the 18th century until the unification of Italy in 1861. Under the reign of the Bourbons, the island saw an architectural and urban renewal that left a lasting mark.
One of the most evident aspects of the Bourbon influence is the renovation of historic buildings and the construction of new palaces, which reflected the neoclassical taste of the time. Among the most significant works are the Palazzo Beneventano, an example of Baroque architecture that has been renovated, and the Palazzo del Senato, which symbolizes the administrative power of the time. The construction of new roads and the redevelopment of squares helped to modernize the urban layout.
In addition, the Bourbons promoted economic and commercial activities, favoring the port of Syracuse, which acquired greater importance in the Mediterranean. This led to an increase in commercial traffic and an influx of people, influencing the social and cultural life of the island.
The Bourbon influence also left a profound mark on the local culture, with the introduction of educational institutions and the promotion of the arts. However, the changes were not without tensions, as the local population had to deal with the new dynamics imposed by the central power.
