Menaggio is the largest town of the central lake area. It is also a part of the Triangolo Lariano. The Lario Triangle. Lario is the Latin name of the lake. The triangle connects Menaggio. Varenna and Bellagio. Most possibly the most popular villages. It is also the more "lived in" village of the area with offices, shops, banks, schools and hospital. So not only will you be a part of the tourists staying in the village but you will be surrounded by locals so you will get the feeling of the Italian life style. Menaggio's lake front promenade is one of the nicest of the lake, beautifully taken care of by the council gardeners.
Menaggio is an old Roman town and has a wonderful antique historic center that begins down at the lake to continue up the hillside to the old walls of the Castle. Unfortunately there isn't much remaining of the original building but the Church of San Carlo is well worth a visit. The best thing to do is to take advantage of the Tourist office in the main Square, Piazza Garibaldi. They are very helpful and will give you all the information you could need, timetables, brochures, maps and indications on "what to do today". You will realise that It is well served by public transportation with frequent buses and boats. Como is only 25km away and Lugano 20km, but do remember your passport as it is in Switzerland.
Make sure you visit the surrounding villages, Porlezza, on the way to Lugano and is on Lake Lugano, continuing in this direction you reach ValSolda. A string of villages that have no choice than to creep up the mountain. It is known as the "Piccolo Mondo Antico" the small antique world. Also the Tremezzina area must not be misses. It goes from Tremezzo to Lenno.....wonderful little villages all on the lake with beautiful Villas to visit, Carlotta and Balbianello and just to amble in general discovering the historic centres.
Bellagio and Varenna are surly not to be misses, Bellagio quite touristy but if you appreciate the lanes and...
