About 25 years ago the Lemnaouar family, or locally known as Ait Bassou, started organizing weddings for Berber-brides on the high plateau overlooking the Dades Valley. Luxury tents and tapestry were used. After a while people liked to stay for several days (the weddings took several days!) and slept in the tents. Then the first rooms were build. There were already a few cave-rooms, that used to belong to nomads passing through this region. They were made suitable for guests to sleep in (with beds and a bathroom) and are still used.
Last year 6 of the cave-rooms were made bigger and more luxury. Some of the old cave-rooms though, are still quite basic!
The suite-rooms (with sitting area) were added about 15 years ago.
Throughout the hotel you can still admire the original Berber-carpets, that have all been collected individually by the owners of the hotel, being used for the weddings.
In the small shop next to the reception you can still find some of the local, antique, Berber Jewelry that the Berber-brides used to wear during their wedding ceremonies..
Berber-weddings are still held in the hotel, now in the large dining room with open fire and view over the Valley.
The Lemnaouar family love to travel and still organize huge tent camps throughout Morocco. From the deep south of Morocco and the Sahara, to the Rif Mountains. Working with Arab sjeiks but also with the Royal Family of Morocco they can accommodate up to 1000 people in luxury tents with bathrooms and catering...
They've worked in the film-industry, where their decorating skills were highly appreciated.
One of the sons now owns a travel agency and is living like a modern nomad, discovering new roads and showing the beauty of his country (Morocco) to everyone who is interested.
Despite all those activities, the Kasbah Tizzarouine in their home-village, still has a great place in their hearts. This is why they try to be there as often as possible. You can always find one of the family-members around (one of the three brothers/uncles, or one of their five sons). Even nephews and the first grand-son join in with the drumming sessions a night!
The daily routine however, is in hands of the managing director.
Come and feel the magic of this place for yourself...
