Hi, Tony and Jennie Bender are the proud owners of Chelsea House Bed & Breakfast, a beautiful old Kauri Villa full of character and warmth.
We look forward to welcoming you as guests in our beautiful home during your stay with us in Whangarei. Our home is a large 110+year old character villa, which in its past life was well renown as ‘Chelsea Tea House’. People would come from near and far to enjoy Devonshire teas on the peaceful verandah and in the manicured front garden. The house has a relaxed, comfortable decor - with high ceilings, polished native Kauri floors and many architectural features inside and out.
We are centrally located to town and just across the road from our home is Mair Park with local bush walks, walking tracks to the Whangarei Falls or Town Basin -with its cafes, restaurants and art shops.
Upon arrival at Chelsea House, you will be warmly greeted by Jennie into our charming and Bed and Breakfast. Although Tony and I took over the well established B&B in 2017 we have hosted over 1800 guests. Our careers have been in tourism & hospitality. Jennie spent many years visiting her grandparents in Whangarei and staying at Pataua beach at her grandparents bach (holiday home).
Our shared love for travel brought us together over 25 years ago, both hosting 18 day Contiki Tours around New Zealand as tour guides. We soon settled on Waiheke Island, where we owned the travel agency and Jennie dabbled in wedding co-ordination at a top vineyard on Waiheke. After eleven years living an idyllic life on the Island raising our daughter Sarah, we relocated to Auckland for her education.
As a family, we have always enjoyed travelling overseas, often choosing to stay in a Bed and Breakfast. The hospitality, friendships and comfort provided to us during our travels, have always been memorable aspects of our holidays. An added bonus is the in-depth local knowledge our hosts have had, allowing us to understand and explore the area in a more authentic way.
Close to Chelsea House is well located to the Town Basin Marina, located on the banks of the Hatea River. Here you will find a busy marina, cafes, galleries and the Hundertwasser Art Gallery (to open Dec 2021). There is a 4.2km Hatea Loop walking trail with sculptures & NZs only Camera Obscura on the other side of the award winning Te Matau A Pohe bridge. Whangarei has it's own Kiwi House with two resident Kiwi. The Quarry Gardens are world class, built by volunteers in an old Quarry and the busy Quail Cafe in the Quarry does a good coffee. Visit the Historical Village in the Manu countryside. If you enjoy a bit of a hike, take the trail to the top of Mt Parahaki with views across Whangarei to Mt Mania, another mountain which offers spectacular views across the harbour and up and down the coast.
If you are not planning to go to all the way to Cape Reinga you can make Chelsea House in Whangarei your base to explore the North, you can easily make day trips to many of Northlands stunning beaches, the famous Kauri Forest or Paihia in the Bay of Islands both only 60 minutes away.
