Brand new summer 2024:
Wide views over Oruawharo Medlands and the ocean make this modern two-bedroom, two bathroom off grid beach house perfect for your beach hols.
Architectural design, with sun decks in front and shade in the rear. Just 5 min. walk to the beach .
Off-grid means no hair dryers or rice cookers, but with Starlink internet, usb charging points, filtered drinking water, and even a washing machine for you to use, it's perfect for a longer stay or working holiday.
Born in the Netherlands, I have been living in New Zealand since 1999. I love my new country and the things I love doing most are spending time on the beach or in the water with fam and friends, hiking with my mates and spending time at home doing creative stuff.
When I go on holiday, I sometimes stay on Aotea, but I also like to go on road trips, to visit friends and family, and beautiful places. There's plenty of those in New Zealand. I also love visiting friend and fam in my old country and the islands of the Pacific.
I like treating others the way I would like to be treated and am a firm believer in the Dutch saying: Wie goed doet goed ontmoet. (Who does well, meets well)
I enjoy hosting people at XSPOT Beach and XSPOT Cliff and where I can I try to make sure our guests have a great break, and get the most out of their time on our beautiful island.
I have been interested in the stars for a while now, as Great Barrier's sky is just so good (it became a Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2017), and it was then that my friend Deborah and I set up Good Heavens. We provide Dark Sky Experiences to visitors to Great Barrier Island. So much fun! Ask me about it if you are interested.
XSPOT Beach House is located above Medlands Beach. We are up the hill, so we're out of the tsunami zone and have fab water views, unlike most houses closer to the beach! ;-)
Medlands beach is less than 5 min. stroll away and is great for walks, swims and surf.
The two largest settlements, Tryphena and Claris, with shops and eateries are 10 min. drive. In summer a brewery with refillery is open just down the road.
If you're a first time visitor to Aotea Great Barrier Island, I must tell you that the island is not for everyone.
Aotea is off the beaten track and off grid. Get here by catching a 30 min, flight or a 4.5 hr ferry. When the weather is rough, a few times a year, these services can get cancelled.
Tourist infrastructure is limited and so is power. There's no public transport and it's best to leave hair driers and rice cookers at home. If you're OK with the island's 'limitations', you are in for a treat.
The island offers bedazzling natural beauty: pristine beaches, a great variety of lush bush with walking trails, hot pools, water falls, and endangered bird species: you'll find them here.
We love it here, and we think you will too! We'd love to have you stay!
