Coimbra and the surrounding villages have a millenary origin with a very rich monumental heritage, where the visitor can go back in time and walk through the alleys of the Roman city of Conimbriga, visit the ancient Roman Forum of Aeminium, enter the austere monastic life of the Middle Ages by visiting the Old Cathedral and the Convent of Santa Clara a Velha, go through the Renaissance period and appreciate the most beautiful works of the Coimbrã School of Sculpture at the Machado de Castro Museum, Churches and Convents. And finally, visit its magnificent University dating from 1290 and whose Joanine Library is ranked among the twelve most beautiful libraries in the world.
After long walks and when it's time to regain energy, visitors can taste the estraordinary Beirã cuisine in one of the many retaurants in downtown. At the end of the day, you can taste the rich conventual sweets, lulled by the sound of fado and the Coimbra guitar.
