The Cão & Calf is perched upon a central high point within the village of Fajã Grande, boasting panoramic views of this wild settlement's ocean and waterfalls.
As a guesthouse we have tried to create a environment where travellers can meet and enjoy our facilities within beautiful surroundings, as well as being able to retreat to their own private spaces. On such a remote island, the importance of community is built into the fabric of the Florentino's. We aim to replicate this same spirit and culture so that travellers feel this connection when staying with us, rather than the isolation of a hotel room.
We offer 5 private accommodations:
- The Lola suite, with private bathroom, lounge area and balcony
- The Nina suite, with private bathroom, lounge area and balcony
- The Gracie suite, an apartment adjacent to the main house, with private bathroom, kitchen, dining and living space and terrace
- The Ozzy suite, with private bathroom and terrace
- The Greta suite, with private bathroom
The main house has a communal lounge area, kitchen and outside dining space.
Outside there is a large garden complete with decking area with sofas and sun loungers. There is also a BBQ area and hot-tub.
Our house is set within a small agricultural village. Come ready to have your eyes filled with nature. Please also be aware however that within such a location we may have cows in neighbouring fields, sea birds making strange noises and occasionally insects passing on by. We do our best to prevent any unpleasantness but promise to respond quickly to restore order :)
The Cão & Calf is owned by George and Jennifer.
George Bevan is an avid ocean lover. He runs two non-profits. The first, Conservation Diver, aims to increase the capacities of local managers and divers in order to better equip marine conservationists to teach and conduct scientific analysis of marine ecosystems. The second, Daughters of the Deep, aims to address the gender gap in marine industries and help women in developing areas of the women to gain skills and employment opportunities. When staying with us, part of stay helps fund these projects :)
Jennifer prefers the land. She studies agroforestry and has a farm that she manages on their family home on the east coast of the island.
They also have a little dog called Lua. As long as no guest objects she may be around when they visit the house. She's a little shy being a rescue dog but has a wonderful heart and adventurous spirit. Don't worry, Lua only likes to be outside and so will be wait patiently in the garden until George takes her for a walk on the cliffs :)
The Cão & Calf sits within the beautiful village of Fajã Grande, nestled within an area of flat fertile land at the bottom of an imposing volcanic cliffside that is meticulously carved out by rivers waters, creating a magical array of waterfalls and misty rainbows through a combination of beating sun and Atlantic winds. It is no wonder that this village is the most iconic in the Azores. There are number of local restaurants to sample as well as a small convenience store in the village.
