Casa Grotto is a one-of-a-kind stone studio built into a hillside 800 feet above sea level in North County San Diego. The space was originally created in the 1980s with stone from a dynamite blast, giving it its raw, organic structure. We've since remodeled it into a warm and peaceful retreat with modern comforts while honoring the original design. Guests can expect panoramic ocean views, natural textures throughout, a queen bed, a full kitchen, and a memorable indoor stone shower. There's also access to a private gym, and a fire pit for sunset wine and stargazing. Casa Grotto is all about slowing down, taking in the view, and feeling grounded.
Being tucked into the mountain means we’re surrounded by plenty of nature. You’ll often hear coyotes howling at night when sirens pass on the street below, which is part of the unique setting here. In the hotter months, rattlesnake sightings are possible (though still uncommon), so we recommend staying aware of your surroundings outdoors and wearing shoes in natural areas.
We’re a husband-and-wife team who live on the property above Casa Grotto with our two friendly boxer dogs. We’re both creatives who love thoughtful design, nature, and turning underutilized spaces into places people want to stay and recharge. This space was a labor of love—from construction to decor—and hosting lets us share a part of our home and story with others. We’re nearby if you need anything, but we’ll always respect your privacy.
Casa Grotto is located in the quiet hills above Lake San Marcos in North County San Diego. While it feels private and tucked away, it’s only 20 minutes to the beach, 4 miles from Cal State San Marcos, and just 5 minutes from great lakeside golf and dining at Amalfi. The neighborhood is peaceful, green, and perched high enough for expansive ocean and mountain views. It’s a great home base for surfers, hikers, or anyone who wants to explore North County—and then come home to a fire pit and a sky full of stars.
